Message Board Post:
Who was the James CARELOCK after whom Susan CARELOCK COMPTON (b. ca.
1802, IL) named her eldest son James Carelock COMPTON? Could James
CARELOCK have been the name of Susan's father? I have not yet found any
other records of members of the CARLOCK/CARELOCK family being in
Illinois as early as 1802. I also have not yet identified anyone named
James CARELOCK after whom Susan could have named her son.
It seems very likely that Susan could have been a great-granddaughter of
Frederick CARLOCK/CARELOCK (1720 - 1792) of Mecklenburg Co., NC. Does
anyone have any information that could help me fill in Susan's ancestry?
Susan CARELOCK m. Edward L. COMPTON, 21 May 1820, Jefferson Co., IL. I
have no record of any other members of the CARLOCK/CARELOCK family being
in Jefferson Co., IL, until David CARLOCK/KEARLOCK/CURLOCK (s/o Jacob
CARLOCK/CARELOCK, George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK, David CARLOCK, Frederick
(possibly Cornelius) CARLOCK/CARELOCK, David GERLACH/CARLOCK, Hans
GERLACH) had a child born there in 1854. David's CARLOCK/CEARLOCK
family had migrated to the nearby Fayette Co., IL, area by the early
1830s.
Susan had a child born in Morgan Co., IL, in 1825, after which at some
point the family migrated to Texas, where both Susan and her husband
died.
