The following site lists an 1822 Allen Co., KY, land grant to George CEARLOCK for 50 acres, Bays Fork:
http://www.allencountyky.com/database/land/landC.html
This must be my ancestor, George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK (ca. 1779 - ca. 1862), (s/o David, Frederick, David) of Warren Co., KY, since his second-cousin, once removed, George Washington CARLOCK/CARELOCK (1812 - 1862) (s/o John, Lemuel, Hanchrist, David) of Allen Co. and Warren Co., KY, would have only been about 10 years old in 1822.
Note that George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK (ca. 1779 - ca. 1862), his father David CARLOCK/CARELOCK (ca. 1739 - ca. 1814), and their descendants were not mentioned in the book "History of the Carlock Family," by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929. George's grandfather Frederick CARLOCK/CARELOCK (1720 - 1792) of Mecklenburg Co., NC, is mentioned on pages 31 - 33, 50, 436, and 437 of the book. George was the progenitor of the CEARLOCK family of Fayette Co., Illinois, some of whom used the spelling "CARLOCK," and the CURLOCK family of Jefferson Co., IL.
George's second cousin, once removed, George Washington CARLOCK/CARELOCK (1812 - 1862) is mentioned on pages 438 and 439 of Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK's book. George's son Luther (Carel or Carol) CARLOCK/CURLOCK/CEARLOCK (b. 1841) was the progenitor of the CEARLOCK family of Stephens Co., Oklahoma, and the CURLOCK family of Beckham Co., Oklahoma. Note that George's brother William Henry CARLOCK (1814 - 1872) also migrated to Fayette Co., Illinois, and had CARLOCK descendants living near my CARLOCK/CEARLOCK ancestors. George and Luther are both pictured on page 439 of Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK's book.
Also note that George (b. 1812) and William's (b. 1814) father John CARLOCK (1772 - 1833) and uncle Joseph CARLOCK (b. 1780) appear to have been closely associated with George's (b. ca. 1779) uncle Henry CARLOCK/CURLOCK/KERLOCK of Rutherford Co., NC, and Campbell Co. and Anderson Co., TN. I theorize that Henry may have taken one or both of the brothers in after their father, his first cousin, was killed by Indians. Henry was also not mentioned in Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK's book.

This is a follow-up to my July 3, 2011, posting to the RootsWeb CARLOCK Message Board titled "Re: CARLOCK Family of Mecklenburg Co. and Cabarrus Co., NC," on the subject of early CARLOCK land holders in this area. Since I have no other information about a Daniel CERLOCK (CARLOCK) living in the portion of Mecklenburg Co., NC, which later became Cabarrus Co., I suspect "Daniel" could be an incorrect transcription of "David." The two names do look similar and I know of another instance in Illinois records where a "David" was incorrectly transcribed as "Daniel." Records show that David CARLOCK (ca. 1739 - ca. 1814), believed to be the eldest son of Frederick CARLOCK/CARELOCK (1720 - 1792), lived in the portion of Mecklenburg Co., NC, which became Cabarrus Co. in 1792.
Please let me know if anyone has an opportunity to examine and decipher the handwritten records.

I have found Epenetus CARLOCK and his wife Nancy on the 1850 census for Big Spring District, Rutherford Co., TN, dwelling 883, family 883. Also living in the household at that time were John PEMBERTON, age 87(?), his wife J_____, age 77, and Eliza CARTER(?), age 18. John PEMBERTON was probably Nancy's father, so it does appear that Epenetus was the brother who married Nancy PEMBERTON.

After obtaining contact information from Patricia CURL, I e-mailed Mitch
SIMPSON. A portion of his reply is as follows:
“When I stepped out of my truck this morning to pick up the newspaper I was
standing on the original border of George Cerlock's 1793 Cabarrus County
Land grant #1 issued for 200 acres by the state of NC. He sold the land too
soon for eventually there were several gold mines on the property. Frederic
obtained a grant of 200 acres about a mile to the NW of Georges tract. The
Goodnights, George, Henry, Christian and Michael had grants near present day
Concord.”
I have a brief review of the book at

These are the same maps which I mentioned in my July 3, 2011, posting to the
Cabarrus County, North Carolina, mailing list. Note that Mr. SIMPSON was
listed in that posting as the copyright holder of one of the two books I
mentioned.

Mitch Simpson spent 5 years researching and preparing a map of the original
land grant owners of Cabarrus County. You can purchase a copy from him or
visit me in the local history room at the library in Concord to see a copy.

Subject: [NCCABARR] Map of early land holdings

Thank you to everyone who answered my previous query regarding a map of
early land holdings for the portion of Mecklenburg Co., NC, which became
Cabarrus Co., Dec. 29, 1792.
I have obtained copies of the following books which should be very useful in
helping me sort out information for the various members of my family who
lived in this area:
“Abstracts of Land Surveys & Warrants, Cabarrus County, NC, 1792-1916,” by
Dr. A. B. Pruitt; copyright 2009 by A. B. Pruitt.
“Cabarrus County, NC, Surveys (1747-1916; 1,500 surveys in 24 maps), by Drs.
H. Mitchel Simpson and A. B. Pruitt; copyright 2010 by H. Mitchel Simpson &
A. B. Pruitt.
See the following site, listed as the single entry “Cabarrus Co, NC Land
Warrants (1792-1916) & Surveys (1747-1916),” for further information about
these two publications:
http://abpruitt.tripod.com/id2.html
Meanwhile, I have also found the following on-line source which shows the
locations of land holdings for some of my relatives who were original land
holders in Concord, NC:
LORE, Eugenia W., Map of Concord, Cabarrus County, NC, as laid out in 1796 (
http://www.ncgenweb.us/cabarrus/Concord1796.htm, NCGenWeb),

"Carlock
Mary & William Bradley 12 Mar 1791; d Barbara min-William Graham, Presbyterian"
Based on this information, it appears that there may be an error on page 34 of the book "History of the Carlock Family," by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929, which states the following:
"Another daughter of David Carlock was Catherine Carlock who married one of the sons of Charles and Sarah Whitman of Augusta County, Virginia. By this union two daughters were born: Mary, who married William Bradley and who emigrated to Kentucky, and Barbara who married John Jameson about 1791. No additional information available on either family."
If what Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK wrote were true, Mary should have gone by the surname WHITMAN, not CARLOCK. Also, the marriage listing names Mary CARLOCK's mother as Barbara, not Catherine. At this point I am unable to identify either Mary CARLOCK's father or her mother Barbara.

There is also an index map near the front of the book showing the locations of each of these maps in relation to the entire county. See an identical map at the following site:
http://shagbarkfarms.com/CabarrusLandHistory/index.html
Map 3 shows that Conrad CARLOUGH sold his land in 1767. In comparing different maps, it looks like his land was north of present-day Gold Hill Rd. and just east of present-day Mt. Pleasant Rd. N.
Map 13 shows that present-day Route 49 runs through the 200 acres once owned by Fredrick CERLOCK, about half way between Coldwater Creek and Cold Springs Rd. The 92 acres owned by Fredrick CERLOCK were north-northwest of the 200 acres. (It is not yet known whether or not these were two separate Fredrick CERLOCKs. Two Fredricks, believed to be father and son, did live in the area.)
Map 13 shows present-day Miami Church Rd. going through George CERLOCK's 200 acres of land, near its intersection with Hamby Run. His land appears to have been a couple of miles south of Fredrick CERLOCK's 200-acre tract of land. The first entry in the "Abstracts of Land Surveys & Warrants, Cabarrus County, NC, 1792-1916," book says that George CARLOCK acquired 200 acres of land on both sides of Hamby's Branch "Run," a branch of Rocky River, Nov. 20, 1793.
I am unable to locate Daniel CERLOCK's name on Map 13, but it appears that Daniel BOGER owned land between the two Fredrick CERLOCK tracts of land. It appears that Daniel BOGER may have also acquired a portion or all of Fredrick CERLOCK's 200-acre tract of land in 1802. The written records should be able to shed more light on that.

Need clarification. Which CARLOCK brother married Nancy PEMBERTON? The following source lists the following entry:

"Carlock, Ebenzer to Nancy Pemberton 9-5-1820 [Wl]" [Wl} = Wilson County.
However, the book "History of the Carlock Family," by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929, includes the following:
p. 33 -- "'Eber' (Ebenezer) went to Tennessee and later to Union County, Illinois, where he raised a family, among them being James Calvin Carlock who is the ancestor of most all of the Carlocks in the extreme southern part of the State of Illinois. Epenetus moved to Rutherford County, Tennessee, and married Nancy Daniel. No children descended by this union and the name ran out. Epenetus operated a small store and tavern about 1850."
p. 615 -- "GEORGE CARLOCK (son of Frederick, David) b. 1740, Shenandoah Valley, Va.; d. Mecklenburg Co., N. C., 1815; name of wife unknown; served as private soldier in Captain Martin Pfifer's 2nd Troop North Carolina Light Horse Dragoons from Mecklenburg County. Date of enlistment not known, but the Adjutant General's records in Washington, D. C., show that he was paid for the month of October, 1777, and it appears that he ws paid to April 16, 1778. 5. Rebecca, b. _____; d. _____; m. _____ Shinn, father of Josiah Shinn of Ark."
p. 616 -- "'EBER' (EBENEZER) CARLOCK (son of George, Frederick, David) b. N. C., 1793; m. Susannah __________; basket maker; went to Tenn. And then to Union Co., Ill.; U.S. Census 1840 shows 4 boys under 20 years of age, 2 girls under 10 yrs. ."
Note that Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK apparently made the same error that other researchers have made in combining information for the two George CARLOCKs (KERLOCK and CERLAUGH) who appeared on the 1790 census for Mecklenburg Co., NC. I am presently attempting to sort out information from these early North Carolina records. Multiple errors and omissions appear in Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK's book with regard to the North Carolina branch of the CARLOCK family and their descendants, many of whom settled in the southern states and the Fayette Co., Illinois, area. The GERLACH report on my home page includes what I consider to be more accurate information for this branch of the family. Information about the other CARLOCK lines in Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK's book appear to be more accurate than the information about these southern branches, several of whom have used alternative spellings of the CARLOCK surname.

I do not have access at home to the 1850 census.
The 1860 census shows the following:
P.O. Carlocksville, Big Spring, Rutherford Co., TN, pg. 75, enumerated June 28, 1860, dwelling 587, family 587
E. P. Carlock, male, age 65, farmer, b. NC
Nancy female, age 60, b. VA
1860 United States Federal Census, P.O. Dongola, Union Co., IL, enumerated Aug. 15, 1860, pg. 216, family 1565.
Eber Carlock, male, age 65, basket maker, b. TN
Susan female, age 54?, no state of birth listed
Pinkney male, age 20, laborer, b. IL
Also, were Ebenezer and Epenetus twins? They are both listed as age 65 on the 1860 census.
I presently show the following information in my database. Even though I show multiple sources for this information, there is always the possibility of an error: Please let me know if you find any errors in this information.
Ebenezer "Eben" CARLOCK (s/o George CARLOCK, Frederick CARLOCK/CARELOCK, David GERLACH/CARLOCK, Hans Peter GERLOCH/GERLACH), b. 1793 - 1795, NC; d. 15 May 1867; m.#1. Susannah Rachel "Susan" FORD, 22 Feb 1849, who was b. 9 Aug 1799, NC. Susannah FORD m.#1. Thomas LITTLETON, and had daughters named Elinore Isabelle "Ellen" LITTLETON who m. Eben's son James Calvin "Calvin" CARLOCK, and Catherine Susannah (or Susan C.) LITTLETON who m. Eben's son Eli CARLOCK. Nelly CORZINE possibly m. John PHILLIPS, 30 Jan 1809, Cabarrus Co., NC.

Meanwhile, I have also found the following on-line source which shows the
locations of land holdings for some of my relatives who were original land
holders in Concord, NC:
LORE, Eugenia W., Map of Concord, Cabarrus County, NC, as laid out in 1796 (
http://www.ncgenweb.us/cabarrus/Concord1796.htm, NCGenWeb),

My CARLOCK (KERLOCK, CERLAUGH, CARELOCK, GERLACH) and GOODNIGHT
(GUTKNECHT) ancestors were among the original land holders in the portion of
Mecklenburg County which became Cabarrus County. Reportedly my direct
ancestor David CARLOCK was one of the original land holders for a portion of
the land upon which the city of Concord was built. Several of our family
members, including David's father Frederick, appear on the 1790 census for
the Salisbury District of Mecklenburg County. I am attempting to sort out
information regarding these early land holders. Is anyone aware of a map
available showing the locations of the property of some of these early land
holders? If so, can anyone tell me how I might go about obtaining a copy of
such a map?
