GERLACH/CARLOCK/CARELOCK descendant Susan KUROWSKI has been kind enough to share the following "George Washington Papers at the Library of Congress, 1741 - 1799," site which she has discovered:
http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/gwhtml/gwhome.html
If you do a search from this site for the word "Gerlach," the following five listings will come up:
1. Scanned copy of Oct. 20, 1871, 3-page letter to George WASHINGTON from Capt. H. GERLACH, believed to be Hanchrist CARLOCK (s/o David GERLACH/CARLOCK, Hans GERLACH), (ca. 1715 - 1803) of Augusta Co. and Rockbridge Co., VA. See the following site for further information with regard to Hanchrist CARLOCK's relationship to George WASHINGTON:
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/CARLOCK/2003-09/1063833748
2. Document titled "Passport for Flag Ship General de Reidesel to go to James River, Virginia," which mentions Capt. GERLACH.
3. Don R. GERLACH mentioned as a bibliographical source.
4. Reference to the above-mentioned GERLACH bibliographical source.
5. Reference to the above-mentioned GERLACH bibliographical source.

This is a follow-up to my Apr. 2, 2007, posting to the RootsWeb CARLOCK Message Board titled "CARLOCK and CARELOCK Families of Alcorn Co., MS." One of the individuals mentioned in that posting was as follows:
"Alice Saphira CARLOCK (d/o James CARLOCK; James CARLOCK; Job (possibly G.) CARLOCK; Hanchrist CARLOCK; David GERLACH/CARLOCK; Hans GERLACH), b. 28 Apr 1860/1863; m#1. William Ebenezer KILLOUGH, 19 Mar 1880, Alcorn Co., MS; m#2. William Riley EAST, 23 Sep 1893, Prentiss Co., MS; d. 9 Sep 1920. One of Alice's children was born in Calhoun Co., MS, in 1898."
As mentioned in my recent postings at the following sites, I now believe this to be the incorrect lineage for Alice:
http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carlock/118.137.2/mb.ashxhttp://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carlock/521.1.1.1.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx
I now believe the correct lineage for Alice Saphira CARLOCK KILLOUGH EAST (ca. Apr. 29, 1862 - Sept. 9, 1920) to be as follows:
Hans GERLACH
David GERLACH/CARLOCK
Frederick (possibly Cornelius) CARLOCK/CARELOCK
Frederick CARLOCK
John CARLOCK, Sr.
James M. CARLOCK
Alice Saphira CARLOCK

This is a follow-up to my Mar. 17, 2006, posting to the RootsWeb CARLOCK Message Board titled "Frederick CARLOCK, Jr., m. Isabel CAROTHERS, 1784, Rowan Co., NC," and my Apr. 6, 2007, posting to this same message board titled "Re: James M. CARLOCK Family of Alcorn Co., MS, 1880," located at the following sites:
http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carlock/230.1/mb.ashxhttp://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carlock/521.1.1.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx
In my Apr. 6, 2007, posting I stated, "I believe James M. CARLOCK, b. ca. 1814, MS, to be the same individual as the James CARLOCK listed as s/o John, George, Frederick, David, on pg. 617 of the book "History of the Carlock Family," by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929. This would make James M. CARLOCK s/o John CARLOCK, Sr. (1785 - 1865) and his wife Isabel/Isabelle/Isabella "Ibby" SHELBY (1791 - 1850) of NC and Colbert Co., AL."
As stated in my Mar. 17, 2006, posting, I believe the book "History of the Carlock Family," 1929, by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, incorrectly listed James M. CARLOCK's father John CARLOCK as s/o George, Frederick, David. I believe the correct ancestry for John is s/o Frederick, Frederick, David.
For further information with regard to this family, see the report on my home page titled "Genealogy Report: Descendants of Hans GERLACH." Note that this report is also searchable in Adobe Acrobat by clicking on the words "(View PDF)" which follow the title of the report.
Within that report, I have James M. CARLOCK's lineage as follows:
Hans GERLACH
David GERLACH/CARLOCK
Frederick (possibly Cornelius) CARLOCK/CARELOCK
Frederick CARLOCK
John CARLOCK, Sr.
James M. CARLOCK

See my previous posting to the CARLOCK Message Board, titled "Moses CARLOCK (1791 - 1846) of NC, AL, and MS," located at the following site, in which I state that I have removed three daughters from the list of daughters for Frederick Cornelius "Cornelius" CARLOCK/CARELOCK and Matilda PYRON, and instead listed them as daughters of Moses CARLOCK and Lydia (possibly BROOKS):
http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carlock/230.1.1.2/mb.ashx
I now show the following list of children for Frederick Cornelius "Cornelius" CARLOCK/CARELOCK and Matilda PYRON, including sources. Based on the length of this list, I would not be surprised to find additional errors. For instance, could the Lydia listed below instead be the same person as the Lydia Adeline CARLOCK whom I have listed as a daughter of Moses CARLOCK? Other members of Moses's family are known to have lived in Marshall Co., MS.

I have revised the list of children for Moses CARLOCK (1791 - 1846) based on the fact that I have found his widow Lydia living in the household of Jesse and Jane CARLOCK NORFLEET at the time of 1860 census, Holly Springs, Marshall Co., MS, pg. 7, dwelling 51, family 40.
Jane is listed on pg. 629 of the book "History of the Carlock Family," by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, as having sisters named Laura CARLOCK CHAMBLESS and Fannie CARLOCK NORFLEET. Thus the notation on page 617 of the same book following the family of Cornelius CARLOCK, stating, "There may have been one daughter, Laura M., who m. ___________ Chambless," appears to be incorrect. Fannie is also incorrectly listed on pg. 621 as a daughter of Cornelius.
Following is the current information I have for this family:
1 Moses CARLOCK b: 1791 Mecklenburg Co., NC d: 26 Apr 1846 Burial: Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Holly Springs, Marshall Co., MS
.. Lydia (possibly BROOKS) b: 15 Jul 1785 NC d: 23 Mar 1869 probably Marshall Co., MS Burial: Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Holly Springs, Marshall Co., MS Father: possibly William BROOKS I Mother: probable second wife of William BROOKS II
........ 2 Lydia Adeline CARLOCK
........ 2 Sarah B. CARLOCK b: 13 Aug 1812 NC d: 13 Dec 1855 probably Marshall Co., MS Burial: Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Marshall Co., MS
............ Alfred T. COOPER
........ 2 William R. CARLOCK b: Abt. Aug 1817 NC d: 20 Nov 1855 probably Marshall Co., MS Burial: Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Marshall Co., MS

........ 2 Jane H. CARLOCK b: Abt. 1821 AL

............ Stephen CHAMBLESS/CHAMBLIS/CHAMBLISS m: 21 Oct 1845 Marshall Co., MS d: 04 Oct 1851
........ 2 Frances Isabella "Fannie/Frank" CARLOCK b: Abt. 1826 AL d: Aft. 1879
............ John CARLOCK, Jr. b: 15 Nov 1818 Mecklenburg Co., NC m: 26 Jun 1847 Marshall Co., MS d: 1875 Father: John CARLOCK, Sr. Mother: Isabel/Isabelle/Isabella "Ibby" SHELBY

I have located James M. CARLOCK and his family on the 1880 census, 3rd District, Alcorn Co., MS, pg. 60(?), supervisor's district 1, enumeration district 6(?), dwelling 9, family 9, which lists both of James's parents as having been born in NC. I have not yet been able to identify the names of James's parents.
Daughter Alice Saphira CARLOCK KILLOUGH was not listed with her parents on the 1880 census as the census was taken in June and she was married in March. Alice was also not listed with her parents on the 1860 census, indicating that her correct birthdate is probably Apr. 29, 1863.
I have not yet been able to locate this family on the 1870 census.

This is in reply to Barbara CHILDS's (bsc(a)dixie-net.com) Aug. 3, 2003, posting to the RootsWeb CARLOCK Message Board titled "Re: NINTH GENERATION CARLOCK."
I have located Alice Saphira CARLOCK's family on the 1860 census, P.O. Central Academy, Panola Co., MS, pg. 28, dwelling 250, family 250. I have been able to identify this as the correct family because of the presence of her brother James H. CARLOCK in the household.
Based on that census, Alice's father James M. CARLOCK was b. ca. 1814, NC. Although I have not yet identified James M. CARLOCK's parents, we can rule out the line you listed of James, Jobe, Hanchrist. By James M. CARLOCK being born in NC, he is most likely somehow descended from Hanchrist's brother Frederick CARLOCK/CARELOCK of Mecklenburg Co., NC. Hanchrist's son Job was born in VA and moved to TN. There is no evidence that Job ever lived in NC. Furthermore, according to page 598 of the book "History of the Carlock Family," by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929, Job's son James was b. Feb. 28, 1812. Unfortunately, I have not yet found any further information about Job's son James or any possible descendants.

Who all are you referring to when you say "they also spent time in Overton and White County, TN?"
Also, do you know where in Texas James and Mary Jane KILLOUGH CARLOCK went? Without approximate birth dates for James and Mary Jane, it would be hard for me to make the connection if I did locate them in Texas. I can only guess James's approximate birth date based on the birth date I have of Apr. 29, 1860/1863, for his sister Alice.
Have you been able to locate James, Alice, or their father James on any of the censuses? James and Alice's grandfather James appears on page 598 of the book "History of the Carlock Family," by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929. I do see that this grandfather James's parents, Job and Sarah "Sally" MCDONALD CARLOCK, and their family lived in Overton Co., TN.
As you may already be aware, many of these Southern CARLOCK lines were not included in the above-mentioned book. I have had some difficulty trying to sort out the various Southern CARLOCK lines.

I have Carlock ancestors in my line as well. My Great Grandmother was Alice Saphira Carlock and her brother was James Carlock.
Alice married Wm. E. Killough and her brother James Carlock married Mary Jane Killough (sister to Wm. E. Killough).
My Great Grandparents William E. Killough and Alice Saphira Carlock resided in Northeast Mississippi in Alcorn County. However James Carlock along with his wife Mary Jane Killough moved from Mississippi to Texas.
They also spent time in Overton and White County, TN., as did my maternal Great Grandparents James and Sarah (Clark) Odle.
Do any of the above names show up in your ancestors list.
If so you can reach me at jimmiekilo3167(a)sbcglobal.net
Sincerely,
Jim Killough
