Subject: Carlock, Ellyea
Hello List,
I'm trying to find any info on Washington B. CARLOCK b. 8 May 1808 and his wife Lydia Jane Ellyea b.7 May 1812.
According to their death records they were both born at Sparta, Sussex, NJ.
I find them living in Sparta in 1850, but believe them to have been in Morris county in 1840.
As I have no idea how to obtain records from NJ,or what records would be available from that time, any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
David Parry
Youngstown, OH
This is in reply to the following reply from Kathy RHODES (littlehouseantiques(a)att.net) to my two postings to the CARLOCK list yesterday titled "CARLOCK Family of Lawrence Co., AL, and Tate Co., MS."
I agree with you that Sarah P. CARLOCK who m. William C. POTTER would have been too young to have been the Sallie, sister of Roxie CARLOCK, mentioned in the 1868 letter. The only mention I have found for Roxie so far has been in your postings. Therefore, a revised listing for the family of Thomas V. and Frances CARLOCK would be as follows:
1 Thomas V. CARLOCK b: Abt. 1832 AL
. +Frances b: Abt. 1836 AL
....... 2 Rich D. CARLOCK b: Abt. 1855 AL
....... 2 A. B. CARLOCK b: Abt. 1857 AL
....... 2 Sarah P. CARLOCK b: Abt. 1859 AL
........... +William C. POTTER b: Abt. 1854 MS m: 21 Feb 1877 Tate Co., MS
....... 2 William CARLOCK b: Abt. 1864 AL
To answer your question, this information comes from 1860 and 1880 census records, not the book "History of the Carlock Family." Page 617 of this book lists a Thomas CARLOCK, s/o James CARLOCK and his first wife, name unknown, whom I believe may be the same individual as the Thomas V. CARLOCK listed above, but the book does not list any further information for Thomas other than his name.
I also agree that this is probably the same Thomas V. CARLOCK who was listed as a private in the 35th Alabama Infantry, and that the spelling of "CLARLOCK" was a misspelling.
I do find the following marriage records for individuals named Sallie CARLOCK, but have no further information about these individuals at this time:
Levi ASKEW m. Sallie CARLOCKE, 21 Feb 1877, Tate Co., MS
Jessie WITHERS m. Sallie CARLOCK, 4 Jan 1890, Marshall Co., MS
So far I do not find the Roxie CARLOCK mentioned in the letter. I will let you and the list know if I find any further references to these sisters in the future.

Hi Susan,
Thanks for your email. I'm going to "cut and paste" here so I can address some of your questions:
Q. Is it possible that the transcribed date of July 4, 1868, for the letter you mentioned is incorrect?
A. No, although it is a bad photocopy the date is quite clear. You can view the first page of the original letter here: http://home.att.net/~shanahanfamilygenealogy/mws1868a.jpg and month day and year are crystal clear.
Q. In the letter Michael William SHANAHAN speaks of these sisters as if they were much older than what I estimate their ages to have been in 1868.
A. Very interesting point and I agree, he does speak of them as though they are much older; my impression from the paragraph Michael writes about Roxie and her sister Sallie and the Carlock family is that the two girls are both of "marriageable" age--in fact it is my impression based on the following sentence "You ask me in your letter how Miss Roxie and I were making it. I answer, not at all." that at one point Michael may have been courting Miss Roxie). Also when he says the following: "Miss Roxie's sister Miss Sallie is staying with them now. I do not think she is so good looking as Miss Roxie was." to me that sounds like a young man looking over the available females with a mind to dating them, doesn't it? However, that doesn't make any sense because the Sarah/Sallie P. Carlock that I've identified is far too young based on the following known facts:
(1) In the 1880 Census for Coldwater, Tate Co, MS (FHL Film 1254665 NA Film Number T9-0665 Page Number 240D) Sarah is listed as the wife of W. C. Potter age 21 (est. birth year = 1859) and her brother William Carlock is also in house with age listed as 16 (est. birth year = 1864) both born in AL. Thus, it is from this record that I determined Sarah "Sallie" Potter's maiden name was CARLOCK.
(2) In the 1900 Census, Union Co, MS, Blue Springs Precinct, Poplar Springs Village, Poplar Springs Normal College, SD#4, ED#127 (Ancestry.com Image #23 of 25, Line #21) Sarah "Sallie" Potter is listed as age 41 born in AL with a birth month/year of May 1859. Thus, this record confirms that she was indeed born in 1859 in AL. (Further note: Tombstone in New Harmony Cemetery in New Albany, Union Co, MS also supposedly confirms this birth month and year but I've seen neither transcription or photo of tombstone so I can't swear to it - the info was simply sent to me by a descendant and they reported that they'd seen the tombstone). Death date on supposed tombstone was given as 1940 but I can't confirm this either.
(3) Tate County MS Circuit Clerk, Marriage Records 1873-1953 Book 1 page 380 gives the marriage date for Sarah P. Carlock to W. C. Potter as 21 Feb 1877. Sarah/Sallie would have been abt. age 18 at the time of her marriage.
Q. It appears that the Sallie CARLOCK you mention may be the same Sallie, age 1, b. AL, who can be found listed in the household of Thomas V. and Frances CARLOCK on the 1860 census for Lawrence
Co., AL, at the following site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~allawren/census/1860/1thur54.htm
A. I have long been aware of this census record (think I've looked at every CARLOCK census record on the planet now - lol!) but without having any success in finding this Thomas and Frances Carlock family in any other census records (where the brother William or the supposed sister Roxie was also living in the hh) didn't have any proof that it could be the right parents for the Sallie Carlock mentioned in the letter. You said "Following is what I have gathered so far for this family." and give the following info:
1 Thomas V. CARLOCK b: Abt. 1832 AL
. +Frances b: Abt. 1836 AL
....... 2 Rich D. CARLOCK b: Abt. 1855 AL
....... 2 A. B. CARLOCK b: Abt. 1857 AL
....... 2 Sarah P. "Sallie" CARLOCK b: Abt. 1859 AL
........... +William C. POTTER b: Abt. 1854 MS m: 21 Feb 1877 Tate Co., MS
....... 2 Roxie CARLOCK b: Aft. 01 Jun 1860
....... 2 William CARLOCK b: Abt. 1864 AL
Does the above information come from page 617 of the book "History of the Carlock Family," by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929 that you mentioned in your first email? If so, this is the first record I have ever seen that has a CARLOCK family that lists the "right" 3 siblings (Sarah/Sallie, Roxie and William).
So, I guess the question is, have I misidentified the Sallie Carlock referred to in this letter? Is the Sallie Carlock referred to by Michael in this letter NOT the Sarah/Sallie P. Carlock who married his brother in law William C. Potter? On the face of it the answer would seem to be that I have made an error here, but on the other hand there just aren't that many white CARLOCK families in that area. And it was always a tiny community (both then and now) so I'm baffled. I'm sure the Roxie and Sallie listed in the letter were CARLOCKS (and siblings) but now I'm not so sure that the Sarah/Sallie P. Carlock that married W. C. Potter is the same Sallie Carlock mentioned in Michael's letter. Nothing would surprise me about this letter; I've been trying to decipher it now for about 30 years and it was only within the last few months that I had a breakthrough and identified a lot of the other people mentioned. A lot of them didn't turn out to be who I thought they were! In!
fact this letter (that I thought was written to his sister Maggie Shanahan) is actually written to a dear friend of Michael's - Sophronia "Sophie" Ham (w/o Leander "Lee" Slaughter)! I point this out only to show how wrong a person can be sometimes - lol!
Regarding whether or not Thomas V. Carlock was a war casualty; I found the following information:
Thomas V. Carlock (First_Last)
Regiment Name 35 Alabama Infantry
Side Confederate
Company H
Soldier's Rank_In Private
Soldier's Rank_Out Private
Notes: Film Number M374 roll 8
Source: Civil War Soldiers and Sailors online at
http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.htm
Then I found a muster list for this unit for Company H at http://www.rootsweb.com/~allawren/military/35thCOH.htm
You'll note that there are 2 Thomas CLARLOCKS---one with middle intial of "W: (who is a 2nd Lt.) and one with the middle initial of "V" who is a private. Returning to the CWSS site I looked up the Thomas W. CARLOCK and found this entry for him:
Thomas W. Carlock (First_Last)
Regiment Name 35 Alabama Infantry
Side Confederate
Company H
Soldier's Rank_In 2 Lieutenant
Soldier's Rank_Out 2 Lieutenant
Notes: Film Number M374 roll 8
So they are two separate and distinct persons (relatives perhaps?)
While on the CWSS site I also tried my luck with the CLARLOCK spelling but no dice, so I think the person who did the muster list for the 35th AL Inf just has a TYPO in her listing and that CARLOCK is the correct last name for the 2 Thomas' who served in the 35th AL INF Co H.
Sorry this is so long...but you asked!
Happy Hunting!
Kathy Rhodes
...
This is in reply to Kathy L. RHODES's Aug. 10, 2001, posting to the CARLOCK
list titled "Carlocks in MS and AL." It appears that the Sallie CARLOCK you
mention may be the same Sallie, age 1, b. AL, who can be found listed in the
household of Thomas V. and Frances CARLOCK on the 1860 census for Lawrence
Co., AL, at the following site:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~allawren/census/1860/1thur54.htm
It also seems probable that Sallie's father Thomas V. CARLOCK may be the
same individual as the Thomas CARLOCK (s/o James CARLOCK, John CARLOCK, Sr.,
Frederick CARLOCK, Frederick CARLOCK/CARELOCK, David GERLACH/CARLOCK, Hans
GERLACH) who can be found listed on page 617 of the book "History of the
Carlock Family," by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929. The belief that these two
Thomases are the same individual is based on process of elimination; the
fact that James CARLOCK's parents, John CARLOCK, Sr., and
Isabel/Isabelle/Isabella "Ibby" SHELBY died in Colbert Co., AL; the fact
that page 617 of the above-mentioned book says that James's brother John
CARLOCK, Jr., also lived in Tate Co., MS, where you mention Sarah P.
"Sallie" CARLOCK POTTER living; and the fact that Thomas V. CARLOCK (b. ca.
1832, AL) would be approximately the correct age to be a son of James
CARLOCK (b. ca. 1807).

Subject: Carlocks in MS and AL
Hi List!
I'm new. Can anyone help me identify the parents of the
following CARLOCK siblings:
Roxy Carlock
Sarah "Sallie" Carlock
William Carlock
These siblings are mentioned in an 1868 letter written
by my Gr Gr Grandfather. This letter is available
online if you should care to take a peak at:
http://home.att.net/~littlehouseantiques/mws1868.html
I believe that I have identified one of the Carlocks
mentioned in the letter, Sarah "Sallie" Carlock.
Sarah "Sallie" P. Carlock married William C. Potter on
21 Feb 1877 in Tate County MS.
Sarah Carlock is found on the 1880 Census for Coldwater,
Tate Co MS, in the household of her husband, W. C.
Potter, listed as being age 21 (b 1859) in AL. Also
living in the house is Sarah's brother, William CARLOCK,
age 16 (b 1864) in AL. Based on the birth date/places
for these two siblings, I am assuming that their parents
should be found in 1860 somewhere in AL, and that some
of the family (perhaps not the ENTIRE family) migrated
from AL to De Soto, MS (at least Roxy and Sarah "Sallie"
were living there in 1868).
If anyone out there researching Carlocks has run across
CARLOCKS in AL in 1860 or in MS in 1868, could you
please contact me?
Thanks in advance for any help,
Kathy L. Rhodes
Gr Gr Grandaughter of Michael W. Shanahan
Gr Gr Grandniece of Sarah "Sallie" P. Carlock
& William C. Potter
P.S. Would also like to hear from any Carlock
researchers whose ancestors were from KY or NJ because
the recipient of the 1868 letter was Margaret "Maggie"
Anne Shanahan. "Maggie" was a friend of Roxy Carlock
and they corresponded with one another. Maggie was in
KY in 1868, but she lived most of her life in the Hudson
Co NJ area and I'm wondering if perhaps Maggie met the
CARLOCK family in either KY or NJ prior to their
migration south to AL and MS.
