This is in reply to Steve TAYLOR's (stevewt(a)ionet.net) Nov. 11, 1999, posting to this list titled "Carlock-Ninth-Generation"; Yvonne HENSON's (yvonne.henson(a)wcom.com) Aug. 16, 2001, posting to the Rootsweb CARLOCK message board titled "Re: Arkansas Carlocks"; H. W. CARLOCK, Jr.'s (dragonfu(a)aol.com), July 6, 2001, posting to the CARLOCK GenForum titled "born on petit jean mtn, ark"; and Yvonne HENSON's July 18, 2001, reply to H. W. CARLOCK, Jr.'s, GenForum posting. In combining information from the following four sources, I believe that I have found the connection between the Petit Jean Mountain, AR, CARLOCKs and the rest of the CARLOCK family:
1. Carlock, Marion Pomeroy, History of the Carlock Family, 1989 reprint edition, (Los Angeles, CA: 1929, Marion Pomeroy Carlock), 437, 438.
2. LOWERY, Jeff (jlowery(a)prodigy.net), Dec. 5, 2001, http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:1101799&id=I679.
3. HUNT, Kathleen A. (lyngaas1(a)home.com), Dec. 5, 2001, http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&db=lyngaas&id=I1....
4. Home Page of Yvonne HENSON, (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~yhenson/), "Electronic," Dec. 9, 2001.
It appears that the lineage of Rhoda/Roda Arena CARLOCK mentioned in Steve TAYLOR's query is as follows:
Hans GERLACH
David GERLACH/CARLOCK
Hanchrist "John Christian" CARLOCK
Lemuel CARLOCK
Joseph CARLOCK
James B. CARLOCK/CARELOCK
William H. CARLOCK
Rhoda/Roda Arena CARLOCK
It appears that the lineage of Hurbert Walker CARLOCK mentioned in H. W. CARLOCK, Jr.'s, query, as well as the lineage of Joseph Wesley CARLOCK mentioned in Yvonne HENSON's query, is as follows:
Hans GERLACH
David GERLACH/CARLOCK
Hanchrist "John Christian" CARLOCK
Lemuel CARLOCK
Joseph CARLOCK
James B. CARLOCK/CARELOCK
William H. CARLOCK
James Wesley CARLOCK
Joseph Wesley CARLOCK
Hurbert Walker CARLOCK

This is in response to Paulette WILLIAMS's message which follows, inquiring about books written on the subject of the CARLOCK family. A search of the LDS Family History Library Catalog through the following site brings up the following listings for the surname CARLOCK: http://www.familysearch.org/ENG/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp. Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK's book, of which I own a copy, is the only book listed in this posting which I have personally examined to date. I am not familiar with the other title Paulette mentions.
For a nominal fee, the books listed below can be ordered to be viewed on microfilm or microfiche at LDS libraries worldwide. See the following site to locate an LDS library near where you live: http://www.familysearch.org/ENG/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp. It is not necessary to be a member of the LDS church to use their library resources.
1. "The Buckner Book: a genealogy of the Buckner surname and maternal related surnames". Buckner, Carl Richard, 1930-.
2. "Cameron: family history". Womack, Hattie, b. 1876.

6. "Cearlock, Carlock, Curlock, Lane, Odom and Summy family histories". Lynch, Marilyn Ward (Marilyn Delores Ward), 1938-. [This is the line of CEARLOCKs who went to Texas and Oklahoma, not the much larger line that went to Fayette Co., IL.]
7. "The descendants of Elkano Simmons and Nancy Jane Pierce Simmons". Simmons, Paul V., 1909-.
8. "Genealogy of the families Young, Bigelow, Alklen, Pierce, Carlock, Warren, Converse and many related families: summary". Young, Paul A. (Paul Allen), b. 1898.

3. "Garlick family history". Garlick, Paul L. (Paul Lee), 1940-. [This is not a typographical error. Some American GARLICKs are descendents of our GERLACH/GARLOCK/CARLOCK family.]
4. "Garlock family history". Papworth, Emma Garlock.
5. "Garlock, a New York Palatine family history: containing previously unpublished and original work on some of the descendants of palatine immigrants Pieter and Johann Christian Gerlach, with sections on several other immigrant families by marriage: Diefendorf, Kanouse, Cook, etc." Perry, Richard Chapman, 1920-.

Sue,
I've lost my notes and I need to clarify something. There was more than one
book written about the Carlock family and if memory serves one was History
Of The Carlock Family and there was another called The Carlock Family In
America...also seems one was written by Marion's brother..do you have the
exact information ???
Paulette
This is in reply to the message listed below which I received today inquiring about Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK (s/o Madison P., Abraham Willard, Abraham, Hanchrist, David CARLOCK/GERLACH, Hans GERLACH), author of the book "History of the Carlock Family", 1929. There is quite a bit of information about Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK in the book "History of the Carlock Family". I have the following pages documented so far for him in my database: II, 343 - 348, 472, and 478.
His picture and signature appear on page II. Page 342 has photographs of his wife and children. Pages 343 through 348 include a chapter titled "Marion Pomeroy Carlock of California", written by his brother Dr. Wayne Bryan CARLOCK. Page 472 includes information about his parents and siblings. Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK and his family are listed on page 478.
According to the book, Mr. CARLOCK was born on a farm about 10-1/2 miles north of Lincoln, IL. At the age of 12 he and his family moved to nearby Bloomington, IL, where he stayed until enlisting in the Spanish-American War. After the war he briefly returned to Bloomington, then re-enlisted in the military, this time serving in the Army Hospital Corps and being assigned to The Philippines. When his enlistment was completed, he attended medical school in Keokuk, IA, but had to leave school due to health problems. He went to western Texas for awhile, but returned to Illinois after the death of his father. He spent some time working for his brothers' mercantile business in Bloomington, which influenced him to attend the Bond Institute of Mercantile Training in New York City, where he "graduated in a curriculum embracing, principally, Advertising and General Business Management." After working as an advertising manager in the midwestern and southwestern United States for se!
veral years, he moved to Los Angeles in 1924 and entered into the "Realty Sub-division business". This is where he and his family were living at the time his book was published in 1929. Mr. CARLOCK's brother wrote, "Marion considers that one of the foremost of the achievements in his life has been the outstanding accomplishment of this book, and assuredly it will stand in all eyes as a fitting testimonial to his masterly abilities. ... He has worked unceasingly to make the book both a credit and an honor to his people. Certainly, both the present generations, and posterity, shall return to him their unbounded love and appreciation for the masterly gift."
Mr. CARLOCK married Vivian Frances HARROLD in 1906, and had two children, Doris Vivian and Marvin Palmer, both residents of Hollywood, CA, in 1929. Doris married James Evans KIRK in 1925. The book says she did some movie acting under the stage name of "Dolores KIRK". Marvin, 13 years younger than his sister, was approximately eight years old and attending military school in 1929.
For further information on this family, see the report on my home page titled "Descendants of Hans GERLACH". The URL for my home page is: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/t/i/l/Susan-E-Tilleman/index.h.... I am still in the process of entering information into this database from the book, as well as other sources, and will continue to update the report frequently.
I also find a listing for Marion's son Marvin in the Social Security Death Index at the following site: http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi. According to the index, Marvin P. CARLOCK, born Nov. 8, 1920, died Dec. 27, 1992, with his last residence being Marina Del Rey, Los Angeles, CA. The book says Marvin was born Oct. 8, 1920, in San Diego, CA.
