An 1891 letter written by James McCoy Carlisle, Sr., b. 1811, to his son, James McCoy
Carlisle, Jr., b. 1851, discusses James Sr.'s family history and has recently come to
light. We already had the names of James McCoy Carlisle, Sr.'s mom and dad, Jane
(McCoy), b. 1779 in NC, and William W. Carlisle, b. 1784 in PA, and we knew his
grandfather Carlisle was named "James." We now have his McCoy grandparents:
Robert and Margaret McCoy. We know the McCoys came from NC, that Robert was probably of
Irish descent and that Margaret was a "full-blooded Scotsman." We believe
Margaret was widowed by 1798 and that these McCoys and related McDonalds and Angus/Anguish
McIntosh were all in Garrard Co., KY by then, and that the Anguish McIntosh who married
the widowed Mrs. Margaret McCoy there in 1798 is very likely "ours." We think
the McCoys and Carlisles met in KY, though they may have met in NC. We are certain these
families were very closely related and that these related Carlisles, McC!
oys, McDonalds, and McIntoshes then migrated to middle TN between 1798 and 1809, settling
in Bedford and Coffee Co., in the Beech Grove area.
Hope to hear from anyone interested in these families and migrations.
