I am looking for information regarding John Carlisle, father of Elizabeth and Mary. The
family came from Virginia / West Virginia.
Elizabeth Carlisle was my great grandmother and married William Palmer in Pittsburgh in
1872. They lived in Allegheny City (now Pittsburgh's Northside). Elizabeth died in
1903 (in her 52nd year). The Allegheny City death register gives her parents' names
as John and Sarah Carlile and that she was born in West Virginia. In the 1880 and 1900
census reports, her birth place (and that of her parents) is given as Virginia. I was
able to find an affidavit in the Civil War pension record that documented that Mary
(Carlisle) Shand was her sister.
Mary's death certificate from 1925 gave her birth year as 1851. It further stated
that she was the daughter of John Carlisle and Mary Pyles and was born in Sweet Springs,
VA. She married James Shand in Parkersburg, WV in 1868. The marriage record shows her
age to be 20 and that she was born in Kanahua County, WV. In the 1880-1920 census
reports, she and her parents are shown as being born in VA/WV.
I have not been able to identify neither the daughters nor the parents in any census
report prior to 1880.
I would appreciate any input that could assist me in finding more of the Carlisle family.
Thanks,
Chuck
