I don't know how unusual it is, but I descend from THOMAS Carlisle, b. 1770/74 NC - d.
1849, Lawrence Co., MS, through two children of his son, JOHN BOYD Carlisle, and wife
Elizabeth__?___.
My Paternal G-grandmother is their daughter, E.A./CAROLINE/ "Sulie Ann"
Carlisle, b. ca.1823, Lawrence Co., MS. In about 1847, "Sulie Ann" married
Barnett Lovell, son of Gideon Lovell and Sarah Jones, also of Lawrence Co., MS. Both
"Sulie Ann" and Barnett died in 1862/1863. By 1870, their six orphaned children
had moved from Lawrence Co., MS to Grant Parish, LA with a Lovell relative whom the
Lawrence Co. Court had previously appointed as their guardian. In the 1880 Census, Grant
Parish, LA, my Paternal Grandfather, John Gideon Lovell, is listed living with his
mother's brother, my Maternal GG-grandfather, JOHN A. Carlisle, born 1827, Lawrence
Co., MS.
Story of JOHN A. Carlisle: JOHN left Lawrence Co., MS in 1845/46 with three of his
brothers, THOMAS MEADOWS, WILLIAM M., and JAMES M., and they settled near each other in
Bienville and Claiborne Parish, LA. JOHN A. Carlisle married Narcissa Dobbs, my
GG-grandmother, in Union Co., ARK on December 31, 1848. They appear in the 1850 and 1860
LA Census in Claiborne Parish, where daughters, Lucinda, Elizabeth M., Louisa E., and
Nancy Ann were born. In 1860, JOHN A. and Narcissa sold their property in Claiborne
Parish and moved to Rapides Parish.
In the 1870 Census, JOHN A. is recorded as John Carlise in Rapides Parish, and the Census
includes a son, William, 1 yr. old, the only Census in which he appears. By 1880, JOHN
A., Narcissa and their four daughters, who were then married, had moved to Grant Parish,
LA, where JOHN A. and Narcissa M(ary) J(ane) Carlisle are recorded as Charter Members of
Oak Grove Baptist Church when it was organized on September 14, 1883. JOHN A. Carlisle
received a Land Grant in Grant Parish, LA, dated August 23, 1893. JOHN A. Carlisle, b.
1827, Lawrence Co., MS, died between 1893 and 1899 (ca.1896) in Grant Parish, LA.
JOHN's wife, Narcissa Dobbs Carlisle died there in 1899.
******************
Lucinda Carlisle, the oldest daughter of JOHN A. and Narcissa Carlisle married Melton W.
Smith on January 19, 1868 in Rapides Parish, LA. Lucinda and Melton Smith, my Maternal
G-grandparents, are parents of my Maternal Grandfather, Henry D. Smith, and his sister,
Liza Smith, b. ca. 1870/71 LA.
On October 16, 1885 in Cass Co., TX, Liza Smith, married JAMES BENJAMIN Carlisle. JAMES
BENJAMIN , born March 08, 1866 in Atlanta, Fulton Co., GA, is a son of JAMES WARNER
Carlisle (m. Elizabeth M. Chappelear). JAMES WARNER is a son of WILLIAM T. Carlisle
(m.Nancy Sexton); WILLIAM T. is a son of HOSEA Carlisle (m. Margaret Stewart).
I wonder---How did my G-Aunt, Liza Smith, of Grant Parish, LA, (1880 LA Census), a
GG-granddaughter of THOMAS Carlisle, and JAMES BENJAMIN Carlisle, of Cass Co., TX, a
G-grandson of HOSEA Carlisle, get together and marry in 1885 in Cass Co., TX? Surely the
families knew of each other, adding to the possibility that HOSEA and THOMAS Carlisle may
be brothers???
