How closely related are these three; Edmund G., Hosea, and Thomas Carlisle? Note that
Thomas' son James named his eldest son, Edmund.
EDMUND G. Carlisle, b. 1760 or Nov.11, 1764 NC - d. 1828, Morgan Co., GA, married
Elizabeth Whatley. EDMUND G. Carlisle served in the Revolutionary War and War of 1812.
He lived in North Carolina, Franklin Co., GA, Jackson Co., GA, and Morgan Co., GA, where
he died in 1828. He left a Will that named his wife and children.
The children of EDMUND G. and Elizabeth Whatley Carlisle:
1. WILLIAM WHATLEY Carlisle, b. 1798 GA - d. 1883 AL (m.(1) Elizabeth Ann Evans, m. (2)
Amaryliss Burson, m. (3) M. B. Goss )
2. CHRISTIAN Carlisle, b. 1800 - d. 1826 GA (m. Robert Holmes)
3. JAMES WHATLEY Carlisle, b. 1802 - d. 1888 AL (m.(1) Mary Ann "Mazey" Pace,
m. (2) Mary Ann "Molly" Barron)
4. MALINDA Carlisle, b. 1804 - d. 1824 GA (m. William Graggs)
5. ROBERT/ROBIN WHATLEY Carlisle, b. 1806 - d. 1890 AL (m. Clarissa Mitchell Owens)
6. *EDMUND WHATLEY Carlisle, b. 1808 - d. 1872, Cass Co., TX (m. (1) Rhoda Harden, m.
(2) Rebecca Watson)
7. GREENE WHATLEY Carlisle, b. 1810 - d. 1882 AL (m. Mary Elizabeth Leverett)
8. MICHAEL ANDREW JACKSON Carlisle, b. 1816 - d. 1898 AL (m. Ella Matilda Holstun)
9. ELIZABETH STRICKLAND Carlisle, b. 1818 - d. 1856 AL (m. Rev. William Little Taylor)
*EDMUND WHATLEY Carlisle, son of EDMUND G. and Elizabeth Carlisle, moved with his wife
Rebecca from Alabama to Cass Co., TX, where JAMES WARNER Carlisle, son of *WILLIAM T.
Carlisle, son of HOSEA Carlisle, also lived. Might it have been a planned arrangement
between relatives to live in the same area, Cass Co., TX?
Note: Some researchers add "SARAH COLEMAN Carlisle, b. 1813 " in the list
EDMUND and Elizabeth Carlisle's children. What proof is there of Sarah?

HOSEA Carlisle, born 1767, NC - d. Aug. 20, 1837, Jackson Co., GA, married Margaret
Stewart in 1788 in MOORE COUNTY, NC. In the 1790 MOORE COUNTY, NC Census, HOSAH(sic)
Carlisle and THOMAS Carlisle are listed one space from each other. A ROBERT Carlisle is
listed just below, next to HOSAH(sic). Another ROBERT Carlisle is listed 12 lines below
the first ROBERT.
Also in 1790, HOSEA Carlile, with 1 male under 16, 1 male over 16 and 1 female, is listed
in ST. THOMAS, CHERAWS DISTRICT, SC. HOSEA Carlisle served from South Carolina in the
Revolutionary War, as is noted in Margaret's Rev. War Pension Application for
HOSEA'S service, which turned out to be in the "Regular Army".
In 1794, HOSEA is listed in the HANCOCK CO., GA Tax Index. From 1799, HOSEA is found
listed in the JACKSON CO., GA Tax Digest. He is recorded in the 1820 and 1830 JACKSON
CO., GA Census. HOSEA Carlisle died August 20, 1837 in Jackson Co., GA.
Children of HOSEA and Margaret Carlisle are:
1. JOHN EDWARD Carlisle, b. 1788 NC - d. 1871 GA (m. Rebecca Porter)
2. ROBERT Carlisle, b. 1792 NC - d. 1880 GA (m. Mary/Martha Porter)
3. JAMES Carlisle, b. 1796 NC - d. 1850 ( m. Rebecca Hamby)
4. MARY POLLY Carlisle, b. 1801 - d. 1849
5. LETHA BETH Carlisle, b. 1801 - d. 1849 (m. John Young Southard)
6. *WILLIAM T. Carlisle, b. 1805 GA - d. 1858, Fulton Co., GA (m. Nancy Sexton)
7. FRANCES NANCY Carlisle, b. 1805 - d. 1860 (m. William Porter)
8. EDWARD "Ned" A. Carlisle, b. 1813 GA - d. 1853 (m. Nancy Elizabeth
Whitmire).

Questions:
ROBERT Carlisle, b. 1734 - d. 1786, ( married Sarah Coleman).
ROBERT left a Will naming these three sons, EDWIN, SIMON and COLEMAN.
How is it that so many researchers declare EDMUND G. Carlisle, and sometimes, HOSEA, to
be sons of ROBERT and Sarah Coleman Carlisle?
A few of the Ancestry - Public Member Trees list EDWARD Carlisle, b. 1735 (m. Martha Boyd)
as parents of HOSEA Carlisle, with no proof or verification:
EDWARD Carlisle, b. 1735, Kilmarmock, Ayrshire, Scotland -
d. 1800, Jackson Co., GA
m. Martha Boyd, b. 1739, Kilmarmock, Ayrshire, Scotland
d. 1803/05, Jackson Co., GA
Is the above Edward and the following Edward the same?
Recorded in the 1790 NC Census, Franklin Co., NC:
EDWARD Carlilse (sic) 1 male, 16 and up; 1 female; 6 slaves.
Listed just below EDWARD is:
JAMES Carlile(sic) - 1 male, 16 and up; 2 males, under 16; 5 females; 4 slaves.
Is this JAMES most likely a son of EDWARD? Is he a brother of
EDMUND G., HOSEA, and THOMAS?

Speculations: What if ? ---
1. What if?--- ROBERT Carlisle, b. 1733 NC - d. 1786 NC, (m. Sarah Coleman), and EDWARD
Carlisle, b. 1735- d. 1800 GA, (m. Martha Boyd), are brothers.
2. What if?---WILLIAM Carlisle, b. 1710 NC, is father of ROBERT, b. 1733 NC, and maybe
also the father of EDWARD, b. 1735?
Note: It is posted on Rootweb Message Board (Carlisle) that WILLIAM Carlisle, b. 1710
and NATHANIEL Carlisle, b. 1721 are brothers.
3. What if?--- EDWARD Carlisle, b. 1735 (m. Martha Boyd) is father of EDMUND G., b. ca.
1760 NC, JAMES, b. ca. 1762 NC, HOSEA, b. ca. 1767 NC, and THOMAS, b. ca. 1770/74 NC.
So? Not so? Impossible? Can anyone pair-up and confirm/prove any of these brotherly
connections?
Food for thought,
Rebecca Lunceford
and Clata McCarver
