James McCoy Carlisle, Jr., b. 11 May, 1851 in Beech Grove, Coffee Co.,
TN, d. 14 Jul., 1922 in Arlington, Tarrant Co., TX. He married twice,
first to Mary Elizabeth Anderson, by whom his three children were born.
He married Julia Lavinia Vineyard second. He was Texas State
Superintendent of Schools for several years, was an educator practically
his entire adult life (mostly in TX after moving there from TN), and was
the founder of several schools, most notably the Carlisle Military
Academy in Arlington, TX, which is to this day the Military Sciences
wing of the University of Texas at Arlington.
J. M. Carlisle, Jr. was the son of James McCoy Carlisle, Sr., b. 17
Dec., 1811 in TN, d. 23 Apr., 1900 at Beech Grove, Coffee Co., TN, and
Mary (Bird) Carlisle.
J. M. Carlisle, Sr. was the son of William W. Carlisle, b. 18 Feb.,
1784. William W. came from PA, and was probably born there. He d. 20
Jul., 1855 most likely in Coffee Co., TN. His wife was Jane McCoy, b. 11
Feb., 1779, d. 25 May, 1852. She was from NC.
William W. Carlisle was the son of James Carlisle of PA and his wife, Jane.

The 1981 Montgomery County, Texas History Book lists a J. M. Carlisle as Superintendent
of Public Instruction in 1892. Who was he? Is he related to the Carlisles that came to
Texas from Alabama or Mississippi?
Any information is appreciated.
