Only males can test for surname projects.
Females can ask a brother/father/uncle/nephew/cousin to do the test. Males with a surname
other than Carlisle also can recruit a male Carlisle relative if known.
Anyone can have a mtDNA test done. MtDNA comes from the all-maternal line, while Y-dna
comes down the male line, like the surname.

I would like to know if my male cousin who descends from Carlisle but thru
his grandmother could be tested for dna and if it could see if we are
related to any Carlisles or if I did it, would it be much different being a
female with mtdna?
I don't know how it works and didn't know females could be tested.
My grandmother was a Carlisle.
