MONROE CITY LADY DIES IN IOWA
Mrs. Annie Johnson, Passed Away at Home of Daughter in Coin, Ia., Saturday, Funeral
Yesterday
Mrs. Annie Johnson, aged 68 years, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. L. Luke in
Coin Iowa, Saturday morning at 10 o'clock. She had been in ill health two or three
years, suffering with Bright's disease and three weeks ago went to Iowa to the home of
her daughter. The body was brought to this place Saturday night and funeral services were
held at St. Jude's church yesterday afternoon, conducted by Rev. O. Lindstrom. Burial
was in St. Jude's cemetery.
Mrs. Johnson was a splendid Christian woman, devoted to her family and loyal to her
friends. She was born near Johnstown, Sussex county, Pennsylvania, August 16, 1852, her
maiden name being Roxannie Carlisle. Was married to Henry G. Johnson January 28, 1874,
the husband and two children preceding her in death. Two sons and two daughters survive,
Miss Mae Johnson of this city and Mrs. E. L. Luke, of Coin, Iowa, and Ralph S. and Carl G.
Johnson, of Dallas, Texas. She was the second oldest in a family of ten children, and the
oldest of eight surviving, leaving three sisters and four brothers. These are: Joel
Carlisle, of Corvallis, Mont.; Samuel G. Carlisle, Pueblo, Colo; Jno. W. Carlisle,
Sedalia, Mo.; Wilber R. Carlisle, Kansas City; Mrs. B. F. Gaines, Perry Island, Fla.; Mrs.
W. A. Todd, Palmyra, and Mrs. L. A. Kelly, of Monroe City.
Mrs. Johnson had been a resident of Monroe City thirty-seven years.
Those from a distance attending the funeral here were: Mr. and Mrs. Carl Johnson, Dallas,
Texas; Dr. and Mrs. E. L. Luke and family, Coin, Iowa; Samuel G. Carlisle, Pueblo, Colo;
Mr. and Mrs. Jno. W. Carlisle, Sedalia,and Mrs. W. A. Todd, Palmyra.

From the death certificate of Roxanna Johnson (Iowa No. 73-349) her date of birth is
given as 16 AUG 1854, and her cause of death was listed as chronic nephritis; secondary
condition was organic heart disease, dying 18 DEC 1920. She died peacefully at the home
of Edward Louis Luke and her daughter Delia (Johnson) Luke in Coin, Lincoln Twp., Page
County, Iowa. Her father's name is given as John W. Carlisle born in Deleware.
Roxanna's place of birth is also given as Deleware. A baby book entry for one of her
descendents has her state of birth as Maryland. There is a Sussex County in Deleware;
there is no Sussex County in Maryland; there is no Sussex County in Pennsylvania. Roxanna
married Henry George JOHNSON, 28 JAN 1874 in Marion Co. MO. They has the following
surviving children: Ralph S. and Carl G. Johnson, of Dallas, Texas; May Florence Johnson
(never married 1888-1954); and Delia Johnson (1880-1957). Henry George Johnson was a son
of Daniel Francis Johnson and !
Frances Rebecca Graham who married 1 AUG 1832 near Gallatin, Sumner County TN. They soon
moved to Marion County MO, obtaining land patents in 1835 and 1837.
