I have a James Reynold Carlisle violin. I inherited it from my paternal grandfather, James
Mitchell Brown, who procured the wood for the Carlisle violins in the Lake Toxaway area of
North Carolina. The violin is thumbprinted, #78 and was made in 1924. Mr. Carlisle gave it
to my grandfather in appreciation for his help in choosing particular trees and woods for
the violins. My grandfather was a supervisor of a lumber camp owned by Champion Paper and
Fiber Company, in Canton, North Carolina. The CEO of the paper mill was Reuben B.
Robertson, Jr. My grandfather died in 1955. My violin has the original strings and has
never had a bow. It is in very good condition. My grandfather valued it greatly. My
father, William Christopher Brown, inherited, then my brother James Mitchell Brown II,
then I inherited in 1996 when my brother passed away.
