Bill,
Sorry, I have no idea from where in PA my James Carlisle came. Another researcher on this
line has a lead or two she plans to investigate, but we have nothing concrete.
Our Carlisles are closely associated with McCoys, McDonalds, and Anguish McIntosh, all of
whom seem to have come to Middle TN from KY. William W. Carlisle, b. 1784, married Jane
McCoy, b. 1779. Best evidence currently at hand is that William W. was "from
PA", but not necessarily that he was born there. In the 1880 census records for his
two oldest children, Margaret, the oldest, b. 1810 in TN, says both her parent were b. in
PA. The second child, son James McCoy, b. 1811, says his dad was b. in PA, mom in NC.
The McCoy family is believed to have come from NC, but may have come from VA. They have no
ties I've yet found to the feuding McCoys. Jane McCoy's dad, Robert, apparently
died early. He very well may have been the Robert McCoy who died in 1790 in the Buffalo
Shoals area of NC. We think his widow, Margaret, is the same "Mrs. Margaret
McCoy" who remarried Anguish McIntosh in Gerrard Co., KY, 1798. Gerrard Co., KY
neighbors Bourbon and Fayette Cos. Lexington is in Fayette Co. Anguish had previously been
married to Jean McCoy in 1781 Rowan Co, NC. Margaret Carlisle, dau of William W., married
William R. McDonald, b. 1809 "near Lexington, KY". William R.'s parents were
most likely, but not proven, Roderick and Isabell (McCoy) McDonald, who married in 1800 in
Gerrard Co., KY. All of these families appear in the early census and court records of
Bedford and Coffee Cos., TN. Primary source records written by James McCoy Carlisle, Sr.,
son of William W., and by William R. McDonald, h!
usband of Margaret Carlisle, show that they came to Middle TN by 1820 (the McDonalds),
though some were here as early as 1798 or 1799 (the Carlisles, McCoys, and McIntoshes). We
do not know if the Carlisles migrated from PA directly to KY, or if they first went to
NC/VA, then to KY.
So, as you can see, at the very least all these families were temporally and
geographically linked. When the documented proof is added to the circumstantial evidence,
we think we have a the above down pretty much right. But, as you can also see, there is a
lot of tantalizing stuff not quite proven, and then there is the complete void concerning
details of what I know of James Carlisle's siblings, parents, and ancestry. We do know
that William W. Carlisle was either "partly or all Irish," and that his wife,
Jane (McCoy) Carlisle was "full-bloded scotchman"(sic).
One thing further: the names of William W. and Jane (McCoy) Carilse's children
Margaret, James McCoy, Robert Bishop, Mary Isabella, and William A. Carlisle.
I'm always interested to hear from others researching the early PA Carlisles. Hope
I've shared something of interest to you as well!
Greg
