Beverly,
Thanks for the information you provided about Allen R. Carlisle and his descendents and
for sending your email address. I'm sending a reply to you personally at your email
address,as well as posting this reply.
I hadn't found that there had been a pronounced change in the spelling of Carlisle to
Carlile in my research, therefore I have had minimal information about Allen's
descendents. I would like to know more.
I hope you noted that in my quiery I was requesting any proof of the maiden name of
Elizabeth Carlisle, wife of John Boyd Carlisle, of Lawrence County, Mississippi. It seems
you may have determined that Saunders is her correct maiden name and you have done
extensive research of the Saunders. What proof do you have that she is Elizabeth
Saunders, not Elizabeth Monroe or Elizabeth Meadows?
When I first began researching the Carlisles, I accepted that Elizabeth was Elizabeth
Saunders because that seemed to be who everyone I communicated with at the time said she
was. I didn't ask anyone for their proof of her maiden name. Later in my research,
I learned that two of their sons were issued US Government Land Patents/ Grants: to their
oldest son, as Thomas Meadows Carlisle, and to their 3rd son, as Asa Meadows Carlisle. (I
have not obtained their applications made for the Land Grants from the US Govt. Office,
but I assume they must have applied using the middle name Meadows.) Another of their
sons,Isham Carlisle, named a son Meadows Carlisle. There was an Elizabeth Jane Meadows in
Georgia about the time John Boyd Carlisle and Elizabeth were married. Because of family
naming patterns of the day, I lean toward Elizabeth's maiden name being Meadows
(although I have no proof).
I also learned that Allen R. Carlisle's middle name was Robertson from the US Land
Patent/Grant issued to him (#10924A, Feb.1, 1859, 200 acres)
Here is a bit of what I have found on the Carlisles we are related to:
THE THOMAS CARLISLE FAMILY
In the 1790 Census, Thomas Carlisle is recorded in Moore Co., NC, and Hosea Carlisle and a
Robert Carlisle are listed just below and next to him. In 1800, Thomas Carlisle and
family are recorded in Hillsborough, Chatham Co., NC. . After 1800, we think Thomas and
family moved into Georgia. Thomas is not found in the 1810 GA Census, but we found that
his oldest daughter, Susannah/Susan Carlisle, was married in Hancock Co., GA, on January
09, 1809. to George Douglass (of Jones Co., GA) There is recorded evidence that Thomas
Carlisle, and possibly his son James Carlisle, served from Georgia in the War of 1812. By
1820, the Thomas Carlisle Family had moved to Lawrence Co., MS.
(Note: Some say that our Thomas Carlisle and Polly McKinney were married in 1825 in
Lincoln Co., GA. (I think) it's unlikely that Thomas
would have traveled back to GA, besides Census records indicate Thomas had a wife,
approximately his age (b. 1770-1774) in all the Census Records in which Thomas is
recorded.)
OUR earliest proven Carlisle ancestors are Thomas Carlisle and his Wife, (Name Unknown).
She was born circa 1770-74 in NC, and died about 1844-45 in Lawrence Co., MS. Also born
circa 1770-74 in NC, Thomas Carlisle died March 9, 1849, in Lawrence Co., MS, leaving a
Will that named his children, (except for Benjamin, who died in Lawrence Co., circa 1823,
when he was a young man). John B. was named executor of his will. Thomas' children
are:
1. Susannah/Susan Carlisle M. George Douglass
2. John B. Carlisle M. Elizabeth *Meadows
3. James Carlisle M. Mary E. Bishop
4. Frances A. Carlisle M. Thomas D. Grant
5. Benjamin Carlisle, d. ca. 1823, Lawrence Co., MS

7. Elizabeth Carlisle M. Starkey Hargroves
8. Mary Ann Emily Carlisle M. Elias Oliver Sanders
