The first I know of would have been in Old York, now in York County, ME -- Our Joseph
appears there before 1680 without any previous history - He married Elizabeth Bean and as
she was born abt 1669, we'd have to assume that he was born about the same time -- we
have a Joseph Kerley, son of Capt. Henry and his first wife Elizabeth White Kerley who had
a son Joseph in 1669. The family was hit very hard by a massacre in Lancaster, MA in 1676
when several members of the communitey were slaughtered, including Joseph's mother and
older brother William. Some family members who were listed as having died in that affair
have been found to have survived. Some others are mentioned as having been taken captive,
and some of those were taken to "Canada" and later ransomed or released or
escaped -- at that time, the territory that is now Northern Maine was part of French
Canada and we believe that because of so many common surnames that appear in the Joseph
Carlile of Old York's histo!
ry as well as age commonalities with his wives, that Joseph was a survivor of the
Lancaster massacre.
Also, Joseph had a brother Bartholomew and some of his descendants, especially those who
moved north and east of the Lancaster area also appear to have used the Carlile/Carlisle
spelling - Can you tell me a little more about your line?
