Message Board Post:
My husband has recently found a branch of the Carlisle family that emigrated to the USA
from England.
Abraham Carlisle (b: 13 May 1821 d: 12 Sep 1885) was born in Lancashire, England and
arrived in the USA sometime between 1840 and 1850. He settled in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio
and lived there until his death. He started life in Columbus as a carpenter and ended up
being a sucessful lumber merchant.
He married Anna Higgins and had four children, Mary Carlisle (b: 1844), William Carlisle
(b: 14 Feb 1849), Sarah Carlisle (b: 18 Dec 1850) and Alice Carlisle (b: 26 Jan 1857). (I
am not sure but Mary and William may have been from a previous marriage).
I believe Alice married a Wallis G Bowland and Sarah married a Mr Corner. I have no idea
of the dates of these events and I do not know Mr Corner's first name.
Does anyone have any information on this family? My husband is particularly interested in
the reason why Abraham settled in Columbus. Did he have relatives who had already
emigrated there?
Any help would be appreciated.
