Hi Judy
Thanks for your response. Every little helps in this genealogy jungle.
Diane (my wife) passed this onto me. Abraham Carlisle is the chap I am chasing. He is a
1st cousin 6 times removed and emmigrated from the UK sometime before 1849. He settled in
Columbus, Ohio and became a profitable Lumber Merchant with personal assets of over
$15000
From your comments, it looks like there were some Carlisles already living in Columbus
before 1849 time. That is interestring. Emmigration is not something people undertook
lightly. If Abraham had relatives in Columbus already then this could have influenced his
motives for this big step.
Carlisle is such am unusual name that I am suspicious of any coincidences. I have found
from research in the UK that a seemingly disparate Carlisle living in a weird and obscure
place is often found to link into the family tree after some further research. You can
never rule anything out.
There are several Carlisles that dissapear from UK records around 1800.
Notable missing Carlisle men are Aaron Carlisle (dob 1792) and Abraham Carlisle (dob
1787). They are brothers of my 6th Great Grandfather and I cannot find any details of
them in the UK records. They just seem to have vanished off the face of the earth. They
may simply have died but there is a possibility that they emmigrated. There are also
several men from the next generation that vanish as well. Curious and intersting!
There are also a couple of sisters who disappear but, barring illigitimacy, it is
unlikely that they would have passed on the name.
It is a long shot, I know, but do these names ring a bell?
In answer to your questions, I do not recognise any of the names directly but there are
some possible links to chase.
