Dear Majorie,
On Saturday you sent me an email about John Thomas Carlisle, but it had no
"body" to it. Would you please try and retransmit it, so that I can respond.

not from her message. I, too, would like to know how to contact someone for
records.
My Carlisle anecestors were in Lancaster, SC abt 1840, the first known place
that I have them. They went to GA, AL and then to TX.
I don't know id we have ever communicated but I would be interested in
sharing info.

Subject: Grasmere, Lake District, Cumbria, England--"Home Abbey of the
Carlisle Family"
While visiting England several years ago I had the good pleasure of
spending a day in Grasmere. It's a beautiful rural place and I could see
immediately why so many Londoners flock to it on their holidays.
While walking around the village, I spent some time photographing
tombstones in the abbey cemetery. Wordsworth and his family are buried
there.
When we were walking back to the coach, a friend pointed out a sign
at the front of the abbey I'd missed: "Home Abbey of the Carlisle
Family."
For someone who was only beginning to find her CARLISLEs, this was a
day
to
surpass many others.
Ever since that afternoon I've wondered whether the records of this
abbey, and the Carlisles who must've belonged to it, are available
somewhere. With other lines to follow that were infinitely more available
to me at the time, I haven't pursued this any further. Now I'm feeling
the
need to check this out.
Has anyone done any research to records in Grasmere? I hear that
British records have recently changed repositories from what I had known
to
be the standby before; but my need for records on this line
begins--and
then
goes back through history--from the 1600s. Does this make a
difference in
where I research? My understanding is that it does and that I should
write
the abbey personally to see what's there; however, there's
something in
the
back of my mind I might have read somewhere (where, I can't
recall...)
that
says even the old records--for the most part--are housed in one
location
these days.
Can anyone here enlighten me? I barely keep up with what data entry I
can handle (and I'm a fast typist) and I was hoping, rather than reinvent
the wheel, someone on this list will know where to start and what might
have been found in the records of this abbey.
