Beverley,
The Carlisle family is most interesting and very puzzling in some areas. From what I have
been able to find, there were two George Washington Carlisles born just a few years apart.
James and Mary (Townsend) Carlisle of Biddeford had a son George Washington, born 20 Nov
1808, according to the Biddeford Vital Records, Town Record Book 3, p. 191, recorded in
1811.
George W. Carlisle (not sure whether the W. is for Washington, but a grandson did have the
name George Washington Carlisle) who married Margaret L. Smith, was born 19 Aug 1814, in
Brooksville, Maine, according to the family records which were cited on a pension
application.
Circumstances point to this second George being the son of Stephen Carlisle and his second
wife Mary Rose Trim (who had been previously married to Isaac Turner). Stephen's first
wife was Sally Chase and it appears that the marriage ended in divorce and that Sally went
on to live in Massachusetts.
If this is the George that you are interested in, I would be happy to share the details of
what I have been able to find. My email is helenb(a)cavtel.net
