Sorry, nothing definite on Richard's father. Although I notice in the earliest censuses for that area of SC there are quite alot of Carlisles. So I guess it could be one of them? I also have seen references that Phoebe Carlisle was possibly born in Virginia? Any idea where in VA? The Virginia Historical Index might come in handy for any of that research.

Do you or Lyn have any information on Richard Carlisle's father? Richard would be Nancy's grandfather. Some people say it is Daniel Carlisle. I've seen no proof. Talk to you later. Billie

We have those censuses yes and other things. Jim Carlisle had to sign for Nancy's marriage because she was underage in 1857. Nancy applied for reinstatement of her benefits for pension for Joe Lindsey's service in the Confederate Army. We have copies of those papers. We have a copy of Nancy's death certificate. The main research on these lines is being done by Lyn Moore. She has done the lion's share of it. I have access to Ancestry so I can look up stuff for our mutual files. She told me that Mills was Luensor's (Luranzia's) maiden name. I don't know where that info came from I have to admit. But I have also seen it online. Maybe it came only from that Carlisle book? I have also tried to find the Mills connection. I know there were Carlisles and Mills both in Pike County, AL but don't know if they were connected in any way. Thanks anyway for offering to help. I'll keep it in mind for the future. I can probably pretty safely say that I am related to just about everybody in !
Precinct 11, Jefferson County, AL in the 1900 census ;-) With my Jernigan and related families and the Lindsay and related families all being there. Does the name Rev. James Silas Jernigan appear in that book? He was my gg-grandfather and was at one time a Baptist minister of several churches in Jefferson County, AL including Irondale. Thanks again.

Hi there, I'm sorry but I don't have any Lindsey's in my book. I have Edward James Carlisle and Luensor
(unknown last name) and their kids. Nancy being one of them. The trail stops there. No mention of her husband. My book does have info on her brothers, Enos and Edward Jr.
Where did you find evidence of Nancy and Joseph's marriage?
I'm thinking that you are right though because I was just on Ancestry.com and saw a Nancy Lindsey in the 1870 census living next door to EJ Carlisle and also close to the Stubbs who married into the Carlisle family. Then later in the 1900 census I see Nancy Lindsey living with her daughter and son in law. They are living close to Wm and Matilda Carlisle Rotten. Matilda is a cousin to Nancy Carlisle.
I didn't even know Luensor's last name. Are you pretty sure about that? I'll have to start looking up Mills now. Thanks for the offer to use your research books. I'll remember you and will let you know if I need anything. I wish I could have helped more.
I hope I havent completely confused you. Good luck with everything. Billie

Thanks so much for your generous offer :) The burning question myself and another Lindsay/Carlisle/Trucks cousin have is about a William and Frances Lindsay and their family. We feel strongly that they were the parents of Joseph Lindsay who married Nancy Carlisle, daughter of Edward James "Jim" Carlisle and Luranzia Mills. We find them in the vicinity of these families in the 1860 census of Jefferson County, AL. 1850 they were in St. Clair County, AL. Census info says they were from SC. I found a possible match in the 1840 census of Charleston Co, SC but nothing definite. Seth Moore is also found on the same page of the 1840 census of Charleston SC, a neighbor of the William Lindsay family in 1850 in St. Clair County but by 1860 Seth Moore was in Cherokee County, AL. I seem to see the surname Moore pop up quite a bit with some of these Jefferson County (Trussville) families. So if there are any Lindsays mentioned in that book - they are very likely ours. Thanks again for you!
r generous offer and don't hesitate to ask for one from me - lookups in my references in my personal collection: NC Testators Index; Virginia Historical Index (both huge volumes); Persons of Quality; General History of Marshall County, AL; Census Map Book; Ancestry's Red Book; The Source; Published Resources; so far no SC reference but that is definitely the next acquistion.
