This relates to two men, William Carlin of Missouri and John Phelps of
Tennessee, who served during the War of 1812.
William Carlin was a private in Capt. Phelps' [Mounted] Company of the
Missouri Militia.
John Phelps, who later married Sarah Rogan Carlin, was a private in the
Tennessee Volunteer Mounted Gunmen, commanded by Brig. Gen. John Coffee, and
served at the Battle of New Orleans. He was later a first lieutenant in the
Illinois Volunteers during the Black Hawk War. Mr. Phelps was born at
Bedford County, VA. He married Sarah Rogan Carlin on March 14, 1816, at
Wilson County, TN. (Sarah was born on April 29, 1797, and died April 6,
1879, at Oregon, Ogle County, IL, at the age of 81.) After moving to various
locations, Sarah and John Phelps settled on a farm three miles from Oregon,
IL, in 1835. John Phelps is credited with founding the city of Oregon in
Ogle County, IL. He died April 1, 1874, in Oregon, IL.
My guess is that this William Carlin was Sarah Rogan Carlin's older brother
(and John Phelps' future brother-in-law). This makes William and Sarah the
children of James Carlin and Patsey Webb, and the grandchildren of Daniel
Carlin, who was b. ca. 1750 at Carrickfergus. This is the Daniel Carlin who
later became a captain in the Henry County (VA) during the Revolutionary
War.
(1) Can anyone document or confirm that this William Carlin, of the Missouri
Militia, was the William Carlin who was Sarah Rogan Carlin's older brother?
(2) Does anyone know why William Carlin served in the *Maryland* forces?
(3) Who was the Phelps who commanded Captain Phelps' [Mounted] Co. in the
Missouri Militia, and what was this Capt. Phelps' connection to John Phelps?
Thank you.
Fred
