JULIA CARLIN (nee CAROLAN) was born about 1873 in County Meath, Ireland.
She came to the United States and settled in NYC where she married George
ANDES in 1898. She had 4 daughters and 2 sons and by 1906 she had settled
in Secaucus, NJ. Sometime after that, she ran for the school board and was
the first woman ever elected to the Board of Education in Secaucus. Julia
Carlin Andes died in 1964 at her home located at 287 Grace Street, Secaucus,
NJ
Judy Andes Brauns, of Pleasant Garden, NC, us researching the ancestors of
her grandmother, Julia Carlin (Carolan) Andes of Secaucus, NJ. She has
contacted the County Meath Heritage Center in Ireland, but they've been
unable to find any records for Julia. Judy tells me that her grandmother,
"Julia, was born in April of 1873 or 1875 (depending on which records you
look at)." She has Julia's death certificate but cannot locate a marriage
record which she hopes would show her grandmother's place of birth. "Civil
births and marriages in NYC in the late 1800s were not always recorded,"
Judy says. "I also spent some time in Dublin looking for Julia's records but
to no avail."
Judy has found that "Julia was one of eight children, the daughter of Peter
and Mary (or possibly Phillip and (Mary) Jane) depending again on which
records you look at."
Since Julia was the first woman elected to the Secaucus Board of Education,
we've listed her on the "Carlins in New Jersey" webpage,
http://www.attorney.carlin.net/CA-newjersey.htm.
Judy has asked me to forward the above information to the Carlin-L list, in
the hopes that someone may know something about her grandmother. Judy's
email address is fjbgator(a)att.net.
Thank you.
