It was ol' Horace Greeley who said, "Go west, young man!" Had you and I
done
so, and moved to what's now Greeley, Colorado, we might find that the excellent
water we're drinking comes from Colorado's Carlin Reservoir, just outside the
City of Greeley, in Weld County.
That's right. Carlin Reservoir.
I don't yet have a picture of the reservoir, but I have an email message from
Todd Williams, the Water Resource Engineer for the City of Greeley. Todd says
that
"The reservoir is located in Section 19 of Township 2 North and Range 65 West.
This would put the reservoir East of Greeley. The reservoir was constructed in
1904 and can
hold a total of 63 ac-ft. If you would like more information on the
reservoir, the State Engineer's Office is located on the third floor of
the Arix building at the corner of 8th Avenue and 8th Street. They said
they have a book with decree information that may be able to shed some
more light on what your looking for (pg. 316 in their green book). Their
phone number is (970) 352-8712."
Weld County also includes the Carlin Dam, in addition to the Carlin Reservoir.
And Teller County, Colorado, features a small valley known as Carlin Gulch. (no
joke.)
So in case you thought Carlin sites and cities were limited to Carlin, Nevada;
Carlinville, IL, and Bayou Carlin in southern Louisiana, we now also have the
Carlin Dam, the Carlin Reservoir and the Carlin Gulch.
The next step is to find out the name of the Carlin after whom these Colorado
sites are named. My rough guess is that they're named for Maj. Gen. William
Passmore Carlin, after which Carlin, NV, is named, as General Carlin was on duty
in the Colorado Territory after the Civil War. But this needs research and
documentation. Does anyone want to help?
