As you probably already know, the city of Carlin, Nevada, is named in honor of
Major General William Passmore Carlin, a distinguished Union Army commander
during the Civil War.
General Carlin is the first Carlin, of all Carlin family lines, to have
graduated from a U. S. service academy; he was an 1850 West Point graduate. He
is probably the first Carlin in the U.S. to have graduated from college of
university.
He was a nephew of Thomas Carlin, the sixth governor of Illinois (who served
from 1838-1842) and a descendant of Thomas Carlin, who emigrated to the U.S.
from Ireland in 1774 and became a lieutenant in the Henry County (VA) Militia
during the Revolutionary War.
You can now see a photograph of General Carlin taken by Mathew Brady ca. 1863.
This photograph is a cartes d'visite series of four, taken by Mr. Brady in his
New York City studio. The photos can be seen on the web at

There are also three Civil War bios of General Carlin that you might find of
interest. They're located at
http://attorney.carlin.net/gencarlinbio1.htm,
http://attorney.carlin.net/gencarlinbio2.htm, and
http://attorney.carlin.net/gencarlinbio3.htm.
After graduating from West Point in 1850, Mr. Carlin served as a young second
lieutenant on garrison duty, and as a first lieutenant in the Sioux War
(1855-56), the Cheyenne War (1857) and the Utah Expedition (Mormon Rebellion)
(1858). Some information about his service with the Utah Expedition, which is
relevant to his later distinguished Civil War service, appears at
http://attorney.carlin.net/carlin-w-mormon.htm.
General Carlin is the highest-ranking Carlin to serve in the U.S. Army, from
among all Carlin family lines. Although he is not as well-known as other Civil
War general officers, his career nonetheless may be of interest, and you might
find the three short bios good reading.
If you are aware of any information regarding General Carlin's descendants,
please let me know. Please also let me know if you're aware of any other
Carlins, from among all Carlin family lines, who served in the Utah Expedition
and the several Wars of Indian Relocation (both before and after the Civil War).
Thanks.
