Carlins in Journalism:
http://www.CarlinArchives.com/carlin-journalism.htm
To the best of our knowledge, the earliest Carlin to be part of, and
addicted to, the world of journalism, was Charles C. Carlin, Sr., who
was publisher and chairman of The Alexandria Gazette, 1911-1922.
Of those Carlins in journalism today, the most famous within Carlin
genealogical circles is obviously (Mrs.) Frankie Carlin Meyer, a
Carlin genealogist, published author, and weekly columnist for The
Joplin (MO) Globe.
Other Carlin journalists today include Matt Carolan, a columnist for
Newsday and influential writer and online news editor for Ziff Davis;
Vince Carlin, dean of journalism at Ryerson Polytechnic in Toronto and
the highly-respected former head of CBC Newsworld at Canadian
Broadcasting Corp.; Karen Carlin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (who
modestly points out that she's married to a Carlin, but not a Carlin
by birth); Peter Carlin, a respected senior writer for People
Magazine, and Mike Carlin, the award-winning head of the investigative
team at Fox 5 television in Atlanta.
My late father, Nathan Carlin, who passed away last October, was a
certified public accountant by profession, but had caught the
journalism bug early. He was a sports stringer for The Brooklyn
Standard-Union and The Brooklyn Eagle while in high school and while a
student at St. John's University, and always enjoyed the fact that he
had been able to attend ballgames free, and even get paid a little bit
for doing so, all in exchange for a little bit of writing. He thought
it was a pretty good deal -- for him! And while I know he enjoyed
accounting, I also know that were it possible to have earned a living
as a journalist, he would gladly have chosen that route!
(He was graduated from St. John's in 1935, and jobs in journalism --
or, for that matter, accounting -- weren't exactly plentiful. My late
mother, Kitty Margulis Carlin, was graduated from St. John's in
1936 -- and I guarantee you would not have been at all thrilled had my
father thought of a career as a sportswriter! <g>)
