59 Carlin men, from a multitude of different Carlin family lines, served in the
Confederate States Army and Navy during the Civil War.
Fact #1: The highest-ranking Carlin in the Confederate Navy was Capt. James
Cornelius Carlin of South Carolina, listed at
http://www.carlin.net/attorney/CA-southcarolina.htm.
Fact #2: The highest-ranking Carlin in the Confederate States Army was Col. John
Clark Carlin, who was born in 1842 during his father, Thomas Carlin's, final
year as governor of Illinois. Col. Carlin served with the MO and TX Cons.
Cavalry, and is listed on the Illinois page at
http://www.carlin.net/attorney/CA-illinois.htm and on the Missouri page at
http://www.carlin.net/attorney/CA-missouri.htm.
Fact #3: More Carlins from Louisiana (18) were part of the Confederate States
Army than from any other state. The Carlins from Louisiana who served in the
Confederate States Army are listed at
http://www.carlin.net/attorney/CA-louisiana.htm.
Fact #4: Tennessee came in second, with 10 Tennessee Carlins in the Confederate
forces.
http://www.carlin.net/attorney/CA-tennessee.htm.
Fact #5: Virginia came in third, with six Virginia Carlins serving in the
Confederate Army, including two Carlins who were Captains in the Confederate
Cavalry.
http://www.carlin.net/attorney/CA-virginia.htm.
Fact #6: Three new "Carlins in the Early History of states" pages have been
created, to accommodate Carlins who served with Confederate forces. These pages
cover Alabama, Mississippi and South Carolina. The Alabama and Mississippi
pages are located at
http://www.carlin.net/attorney/CA-alabama.htm and
http://www.carlin.net/attorney/CA-mississippi.htm.
Fact #7: There are now 29 separate webpages covering Carlins in the early
history of the 13 Original Colonies and the States. These cover 28 states plus
the District of Columbia. A master list of these 29 pages, with links to the
individual states, is at
http://www.carlin.net/attorney/statehistory.htm.
Fact #8: The entire list of Carlins in the Civil War, covering both sides,
appears at
http://www.carlin.net/attorney/carlin-w-civil.htm. This email
message relates to Carlins in the Confederacy because we've received new data
with added names, through the courtesy of Virginia Simms Toney of Houston, TX
(who is herself a descendant of Capt. John Carlin of West Virginia, a Union Army
captain). In other words, we're non-partisan; the war is over.
Please be sure to let me know if you have any added data about Carlins who
served in the Civil War. If you recognize any names on these pages as being part
of your particular Carlin family line, please let me know this. We welcome as
much additional information about these Civil War Carlins as possible.
Thanks,
Fred
