Hi, all. Well, we've got Bayou Carlin in southern Louisiana, and Lake Carlin in
northern Wisconsin. And we've also got Carlin Creek, in Fairbanks County,
Alaska; Carlin Dam and Carlin Gulch in Colorado; Carlin Branch, a stream in
Wabash County, Indiana, and Carlin Bay, on the eastern shore of Lake Coeur
d'Alene in Idaho. And right near Greeley, CO, is the small but still important
Carlin Reservoir.
Think of it: Carlin waterways in Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Indiana, Louisiana and
Wisconsin.
And now, just to make things more interesting, we've found CARLIN POND, a small
lake in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania.
Carlin Pond is located in the extreme southwest corner of Susquehanna County,
PA, southwest of Auburn Center. To get there from Auburn Center, turn west off
Route 267 onto LR 57001 (PA Route 3001) and travel west approximately 1 mile.
Although this area of southwestern Susquehanna County shows up on Mapquest,
Carlin Pond itself is too small to be individually delineated. It is, however,
clearly seen on a map of Susquehanna County published by Duff Map Company, RD 2,
Box 1048, Honesdale, PA 18431). It is also clearly shown in the Susquehanna
County Plat Book (Mercury Publishing Company, P.O. Box 474, Kettering, OH 45449.
I don't yet know the name of the Carlin after whom Carlin Pond is named, but
there have been lots of Carlins in the early history of Pennsylvania, and this
matter is being looked into.
If you have any time to volunteer to help with the research about the origins of
the name Carlin Pond, please let me know.
