I've just found leads to two Carlin Ranches.
There's a Carlin Ranch in Albany County, Wyoming.
There was also a Carlin Ranch in San Diego County, CA. It was the site for
what's now the Vallecitos School District in Rainbow, CA. Vallecitos School
Dist. was est. in 1885. It's a rather unique, one-school district in San Diego
County, with a total student population of about 240! According to the school
district's website, "......In 1870, pioneers started homesteading the Rainbow
area. About 1882 or 1883 the Hind family settled on what is now known as Carlin
Ranch or Royal Oaks. They had four children and, as there was no school in
Vallecitos, they rode horseback many miles over the mountain trails to the
nearest school, which was on the other side of the pass near Temecula. ..."
I've written to the supt. of schools / principal by email, asking what he might
know about the origins of the Carlin Ranch on what is now his school district.
If anyone feels in the volunteering mood, and wants to track down the origins of
the names for these two Carlin Ranches, please let me know.
Thanks,
Fred
