The world's largest gold mine is located at Carlin, Nevada. Just what
you've always wanted to know <g>.
Unfortunately, for the people who live and work there, this does NOT
mean that this mine is the world's most efficient, or the world's most
profitable. And mining, even gold mining, creates more than a few
environmental problems.
But Newmont Mining, the company that runs the CARLIN TREND mine, has
just extracted 50 million troy ounces of gold from its Carlin mines.
That's more than any other gold mine in the world, which is the kind
of factoid that you really don't particularly need to know!
A webpage "Celebrating 50 Million Ounces of Gold from the Carlin
Trend" can be seen at

Newmont Mining has issued (2002) a superbly engraved special coin
commemorating the 50th million ounce. You can see a graphic of the
coin at

__________
There are two major Carlin sites in Nevada: the City of Carlin, in
Elko County, and Carlin Peaks, a mountain summit in Eureka County.
Both counties are in the northeast corner of the state, comparatively
near the Utah border.
Our "Carlins in Early Nevada" webpage (featuring only one person,
unfortunately) is at
http://www.attorney.carlin.net/states/nevada.htm
The page includes some information about the City of Carlin and about
the Carlin Peaks mountain summit, plus a photo of Maj. Gen. William P.
Carlin taken in 1863 by Mathew Brady, the famous Civil War
photographer. This photo is reproduced DIRECTLY from the original
Brady glass plates at the U.S. Institute of Military History; it is
not edited or airbrushed in any way.
As always, I'd welcome your ideas, suggestions, information and
criticisms of the webpage.
With best wishes,
