Frankie and Jim Meyer have found a Carlin family line in southeastern
Kansas' Crawford County. These Carlins settled there at about the same
time that some of her ancestors settled in southwestern Missouri.
William, Edward, Walter and James Carlin were four brothers from the
Edinburgh area of Scotland who emigrated to the U.S. in the 1870's to
work in the Crawford County, KS, coal mines. Crawford County has
several rich strains of coal, primarily close to its eastern border
(the border with Missouri).
Among William Carlin's descendants are Thomas Carlin of Crawford Co.,
with whom Frankie (Carlin) Meyer has discussed this family line, and
John William Carlin, former governor of Kansas and the current
Archivist of the United States.
We've developed a VERY preliminary webpage for this family line,
containing some basic background information about the line and the
names of the four brothers. There's a lot more to go, but the URL for
this draft is
http://www.attorney.carlin.net/septs/crawfordcounty.htm
We'd welcome any information about descendants from this family line.
Frankie Meyer's email address is fjmeyer(a)4state.com, and mine is
