Some interesting information has come to my attention regarding Thomas Carlin,
the sixth governor of Illinois, who helped found Carrollton, in Greene County,
IL, where he and Rebecca Huitt Carlin are buried.
My records showed that Rebecca (Huitt) and Thomas Carlin had six children:
1. Julia Carlin, b. 1830, Carrollton
2. Andrew J. Carlin, b. 1832, Carrollton
3. Eugenia Carlin, b. 1839, Carrollton
4. John Clark Carlin, b. 1842, Carrollton (who was a colonel in the Confederate
States Army, even though he would have been 18 years old in 1860).
5. Thomas Carlin, Jr., b. 1842, Carrollton
6. John Massingill Carlin
I now understand that they may have another child, Mary. According to the
official history of the village of Morrisonville, IL, Thomas Carlin, after
completing his service as the sixth Governor of Illinois, purchased the land on
which Morrisonville is located, and entered it on June 14, 1851. He left the
land to his daughter Mary, according to Morrisonville's history, and Mary left
it to her husband, Colonel James Lowry Donaldson Morrison.
The village of Morrisonville is, of course, named for Colonel James Morrison,
who also planned the town. The principal downtown business and government street
is named Carlin Street, having been so named by Colonel Morrison in honor of his
late father-in-law.
(1) Does anyone have any further documented information about Mary (Carlin)
Morrison, including DOB, DOD, etc.?
(2) Does anyone have any further documented information about Governor Carlin's
son, John Massingill Carlin (#6, above), about whom I only have a name.
Thanks.
