Phil Carlin in Florida and Colin Carlin in Bath, England, have told me about the
Carlen House Museum in Mobile, AL. The museum is a restored 19th century
farmhouse, with authentic period furnishings, tools and clothing. It's an
excellent example of a Cajun country farmhouse from that era -- and it's value
to Carlin and Carlen visitors to Mobile is enhanced by the fact that it was once
owned by a Carlen!
So if you're ever in Mobile...
To read about the Carlen House Museum, go to
http://attorney.carlin.net/carlin-cities.htm#CarlenHouse. Wendy Carlin's photo
of the Carlen House Museum is now on the web, and can be seen at
http://attorney.carlin.net/CarlenHouseMuseum.jpg. (It takes a bit for the photo
to download; can't avoid that.)
BTW, we don't yet know the person after whom the museum is named. I'm trying to
get this information from the museum staff and from the Mobile Public Library.
As of now, of all the Carlin (and Carlen) names on The Carlin Archives website,
there's no real connection with Mobile, AL... with one exception (that doesn't
apply to this situation). Bob Carlin tells me, humorously, that Daniel Carlin
Jr.'s son, Denis Carlin (a/k/a Dionisio Carlin), who was born in 1767 at Lac
des Allemands, Louisiana, married Susana Labatterie (Labathere), daughter of
Juan Labatterie and Martha LaPorte. Both Juan and Martha LaPorte were from
Mobile, AL. But that would account for the LaPorte House Museum, not a Carlen
House Museum!
Incidentally, I'm not trying to promote a commercial product; admission to the
museum is actually free!
