I regret to advise you that Leo P. Carlin, mayor of Newark, NJ from 1953 to
1962, passed away last Friday, Dec. 17. He was 91 years old.
Prior to being elected mayor of Newark, Mr. Carlin was a state assemblyman,
president of Newark's Board of Education, and president of Local 478 of the
International Brotherhood of Teamsters.
He was one of 22 children whom his father had with two wives. This is going to
make his listings at The Carlin Archives rather difficult to compile, but we'll
do it!
Mayor Carlin's wife of 55 years, Margaret Gallagher Carlin, died earlier this
year. He is survived by two sons (Leo P. Carlin, Jr., and Clark Carlin) and two
daughters (Eileen Carlin and Claire Carlin Renwick). He is also survived by a
brother, Hugh Carlin of Kent, CT, and by eight grandchildren and six
great-grandchildren.
