Ginny Toney, of Houston, has made an interesting discovery.
There definitely was a hamlet of Carlin, South Dakota. And
there were also three other Carlin places in South Dakota:
* Carlin Flats
* Carlin Bottom, and
* Carlin Draw
This is a fantastic find, and we're learning that a lot of
Carlins lived in these areas.

as well as two articles by a granddaughter of Daniel
Carlin, one of SD's first state senators and a major
cattleman near the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation,

early history of South Dakota, please go to

We still don't know the name of the Carlin for whom these
areas are named, but it is possible that they're called
Carlin, not in honor of any one specific person, but due to
the fact that several Carlins lived in that area. It's a matter
that's still being researched.
Ms. Toney made a superb contribution to The Carlin
Archives Online by finding this information and forwarding
it to us. We appreciate it.
