Thomas Carlin was born on March 28, 1889, in Carlin, SD.
On March 28, 1889, Thomas registered as a civilian for the
World War I draft. More than 80% of those who registered were
exempted from service, and it appers that Thomas Carlin did
not serve in the U.S. Armed Forces during World War I.
Thomas registered for the draft in Ziebach, SD; one could
register anywhere in the U.S., but most registratants did so
near their homes. At this time he registered, he stated on the
registration form that he was "born & lives [in] Carlin SD."
I'm assuming that Thomas's statement was truthful.
I've been unable to find any record of a hamlet, town, village
or area with that name, and welcome such information or any
leads you may have.
I've checked old atlases and maps, U.S. postal records, and
the old maps on the state's website, all to no avail.
Assuming that Carlin, SD was a small area, it may not have
actually been a formal postal address. It may have been known
in Ziebach, SD, but I've been unable to find either Carlin or
Ziebach on any maps.
There are 13 men listed on the "Carlins in Early South Dakota"
webpage,
http://www.attorney.carlin.net/CA-southdakota.htm.
Most are from the 1870, 1880 or 1885 censuses, and two are
from the World War I civilian draft registration. They come from
about five or so different counties, with no pattern that I can
discern.
On a personal basis, I really enjoy finding Carlin buildings,
lakes, rivers, towns, etc., and trying to find the Carlin after whom
they're named. Besides Carlin, Nevada; Carlinville, Illinois,
and Bayou Carlin, Louisiana, we have dozens of other Carlin
sites, from Carlin Hall at Gallaudet University, Washington, DC,
to Carlin Hall at Beaver College in Pennsylvania, to Lake
Carlin and the Carlin Enviornmental Trails. They're all listed at
http://www.attorney.carlin.net/carlin-cities.htm.
I didn't intend for this note to be so long, but I'm really very
interesting in confirming the existence of Carlin, SD, through
some documents, and there must be a connection between that
hamlet (town? village?) and some Carlin.
So if you have anyone in your family who lived in South Dakota,
please check out that webpage and see if you can find any
connection that might help.
Thank you.
