Ben Carling, carling(a)uswest.net, has written to me about his
ancestor, Jean Carling (a/k/a Jean Carlin), a joiner who
emigrated from France to Nova Scotia in 1752.
Jean was b. ca. 1714 in a sovereign dukedom called Montbeliard,
in what is now France. He emigrated to Nova Scotia in 1752
aboard the ship "Speedwell," which sailed from Rotterdam to
Nova Scotia. This makes Jean Carling the first Carlin, from
any Carlin or Carling family line, to emigrate to Canada!
Ben says that
The passenger list was for the ship " Speedwell," which
sailed
from Rotterdam to Nova Scotia in 1752 with hundreds of
"Foreign Protestants" as they were called. Most of the
passengers, including the Carlings, were from the sovereign
dukedom of Montbeliard in what is now France. If you have
any info on Carlin family members from there or Ulster Co. NY.
Let me know please.
Ben Carling
I'm passing this query along to the Carlin-L list, as I have no
information about this particular sept, or about any other Carlins
or Carlings from Montbeliard. If you can help him, please
write directly to Ben Carling at carling(a)uswest.net.
Thanks.
