Our "Carlins in the Civil War" webpage has been updated, with revised
graphics and, most important, the addition of several dozen new names.
The URL is
http://www.attorney.carlin.net/carlin-w-civil.htm .
We now have records for 140 Carlins, from what appears to be more
than 110 different Carlin family lines, who served during the Civil War:
65 served with the Union forces and 75 with the Confederate States forces.
This page reflects considerable research by Frankie (Carlin) Meyer of
Joplin, MO; by Peggy McGill Carlin, of Dallas; by Virginia Simms Toney,
of Houston, and by several of the Louisiana Carlins (descended from
Joseph Carlin, Jr.). (Bayou Carlin, Louisiana, is named after Joseph
Carlin, Jr. and his son, Honore.)
To put this terrible conflict into personal perspective, look at the family
of
Daniel Carlin. Daniel Carlin emigrated to the U.S. from Ireland in 1774
(along with his brother, Thomas), and was a captain in the Henry County
(VA) Militia during the Revolutionary War. Daniel's grandson, John Clark
Carlin, a son of Gov. and Mrs. Thomas Carlin of Illinois, was apparently
a colonel in the CSA Army. Another Daniel Carlin grandson, William
Passmore Carlin, who was a son of Mary Good and William Carlin, was
an 1850 West Point graduate and a major general in the Union Army.<P>
This webpage lists the 65 Carlins who served in the Union Army, Navy
or Revenue Cutter Service, and the 75 Carlins who served with the
Confederate Army or Navy.
I'd very much welcome any additional information you have about any
of the Carlin men listed on our Civil War webpage, or the names and
data related to Carlins who have inadvertently been omitted from the
list.
Thank you.
