I'm not sure how to react to this.
If you go to the Encyclopedia Mythica, which has discussions and definitions
about myths and legends, and type "Carlin" into their search engine, you'll
actually get a definition of the Carlin legend. The URL is
http://www.pantheon.org/mythica/articles/c/carlin.html .
About "Carlin," the Encyclopedia Mythica writes:
She was the spirit of the eve of Samhain (Halloween), the night the
year turned to winter, and the ghosts of the dead roamed the
world of the living.
To me, this actually sounds scary. I'm not sure she'd be someone with whom
I'd enjoy hanging out. And the likelihood is very slim that I'd really want
to be
friends with "...the spirit of ... the night the year turned to winter." She
doesn't
sound like an upbeat person at all! Pretty gloomy, in fact.
I'm not particularly fearful of the Dutch legend of the Headless Horseman --
and
the actual Village of Sleepy Hollow is only a half-hour west of my old abode
in
White Plains. But this legend of "Carlin," the spirit of the eve of
Samhain -- ah,
now this is getting truly scary.
