others in their search. BAB)

CARLIN, or in Ireland CARLAN/CAROLAN/and a few other variants, is not a very
popular west coast surname. The CAROLANs have their deep roots in border
areas of northern Co. Meath and southern Co. Cavan, Ireland. Yes, there are
a few sprinkled throughout the country, but they are spread far and wide.
Mine farmed a townland just across the Co. Cavan line within a few hundred
yards of Co. Meath and immigrated in small grouping over the years
1848-1852.
I have no direct information for you, only suggestions.
You have 2 birthdates in Iowa in 1872 and 1883. Have you pulled the 1880,
1870, and 1860 U.S. census records? Do any of them have immigration
years/dates, or number of years in the U.S.? My reason for asking is that
if the immigration time frame is after 1860 you might be able to locate you,
or most, Donegal CAROLANs (and variants) in the Griffiths Valuation
available at your local Mormon Family History Center... there might even be
a few pages of Griffiths online. This is one possible way of narowing your
search quickly.
If you have a mid-1850, or prior, immigration year then things get more
difficult... but not hopeless yet.
Get back to me and I might be able to help further.
If not, Good Luck!
