I've come across a report listing Carlins who registered for the World War I
draft. I understand that more than 80% of the folks on this list were
exempted for one reason or another, so the names on this list don't
necessarily correspond with the list of Carlins who served in the U.S. Armed
Forces during World War I.
I this context, let me bring two Carlins to your attention:
Thomas Carlin was born March 28, 1889 in Carlin, SD. When he registered, in
Ziebach, SD, he stated on his registration card that he was born and lived
in Carlin, SD, and this is the only reference to Carlin, SD that I've been
able to find.
Walter D. Carlin, b. Jan. 14, 1892, was a resident of Stanley County, SD,
when he registered at Haakon, SD.
1. I've been unable to find any other information about Thomas or Walter D.
Carlin.
2. It appears that neither of them actually served in the U.S. Armed Forces
during World War I.
3. I have found no other reference to Carlin, South Dakota, other than the
one reference above.
Naturally, I'd love to find out more about these two Carlins, and about
Carlin, SD. If you can help, please send me an email note.
Have a great Fourth,
Fred
