Since you have many names from the Borders and Dumfriesshire area, I assume
you probably have the following book, but I am posting it's identification for
any others who may not know about it. I have a copy, but can't make use of it
since I have never found my Carlile/Carlisle ancestor who came to the U. S.
"The Historical Families of Dumfriesshire and the Border Wars," by C. L.
Johnstone, Second Edition, originally published 1889, reprint by Clearfield
Company (associated with the Genealogical Publishing Company), 1996. ISBN
0-8063-4629-9.
This is a small paperback, 213 pages, which extracts info on Dumfriesshire
families from 33 listed books in Edinburgh, London, Paris, etc. One of the 33
books is "History of the Carliles," not otherwise identified. There are many
references to Carliles, Carlyles, and Carlisles from the 1100's to date of
publication in 1889. Appendix B is a descendancy chart from Alfred the Great
(d. 901), on which Sir W. Carlile descended from Malcolm II married Margaret
who was descended from Robert Bruce. The rest of the chart is a
Carlile/Carlyle descendancy ending with the children of another Sir William
who died before 1468. There is a good bit of info on how these people and
fought with neighbors all the time.
I'm still looking for ancestors of Nathaniel Carlile whose will was probated
in Halifax County, NC in 1812.
