Hi Karen! Thanks for responding. I was interested to hear that you had a
David Carlyle in your family, because I have many in my branch, starting in
1696, but can only find one other in all the hundreds of names I have. I
have not yet been able to fit my branch into any of the trees that I have,
either of the descendants of John Carlyle, first Lord Carlyle, or his
brother Adam Carlyle of Bridekirk ... these are the two main lines I have.
There are some George Carlyles, but not quite the right fit for you. You
might want to try a Rootsweb List that includes Glasgow... it can't hurt. I
will keep in touch and we can compare notes. Linda in BC

Linda,
My CARLYLE ancestor was not born in the Dumfries area, although given
his surname I imagine there's a link to there at some point in time. My
gg-grandfather, George Carlyle was born abt 1824 supposedly in Glasgow.
(His daughter's obit says Edinborough, but a distant cousin who found
where he died has told me that it is Glasgow.) He also had a younger
brother David, born abt. 1832. Both were potters. George arrived in
the US in 1849. I could not find them in the LDS parish records.
Are you aware of (or researching) Carlyle's who left the Dumfries area?
Any suggestions on where I can look to move backwards in time?
Thanks,
Karen Carlyle
