But there's usually some truth to family stories if you keep digging. My
friend's family had a story about being French, also, although their name
sounds very much English. Turns out, their immigrant ancestor did come from
England. But his son, once over here, married a French woman. So there was
French down that line, just not that particular surname.

Their father was born in Lee County Alabama, and as far as I can tell so
was his father, William Jackson Carlisle b 1860, Opelika, Lee County
Alabama.
