Subject: [CAKINGS-L] RE: Copyright and obituaries
Hello all, a newsflash that I think you as genealogists will find
interesting. On GenConnect we have been having a discussion about
copyright as it pertains to obituaries. Until just a little while ago,
the policy was stated that it was better to abstract obituaries--to err
on the safe side--even though it seems that most obituaries are not
copyrighted. Copyrighted obituaries are usually long, have a byline and
probably a picture of the deceased.
Okay, that was how matters stood until a message was forwarded to us
from Copyright-L, from a copyright attorney who said flatly that
articles are written by reporters and they are covered by copyright;
obituaries are not copyrighted "at present." (boy does that last bit
ever sound like a lawyer!)
