Tina, Alexander Carlile was listed on the 1790 SC census as over 16 yrs. old.
From the age of his wife Mary, 50 in 1820, I think he was born 1770 or
before.
On Oct. 31,1812
David Nathaniel Carlile (the name of my gggrandfather) received a land grant
from SC.
On Nov. 2,1812 Alexander Carlile received a land grant. On Oct. 13, 1818 Mary
Carlilie
files with the court to admin. the estate of Alexander Carlile, Planter. In the
1820 Charleston census Mary is listed as HOH with nine people. In the 1830
census David,Alexander and Jehu are listed very close to the same location.
Jehu is single, age 25 and living with a 50-60 woman (prob. Mary). I tend to
believe Alex, and Jehu are
sons of Mary and Alexander. I am not sure where David (my gggfa) fits into this
equation

You had to be 21 years old to receive a land grant. However, he may
have
received the grant as a survivor of his father who probably applied for the
grant and died prior to receiving it. Someone else may have accepted the
grant in his name as his guardian. Could this actually be a father or uncle
of his, instead of him?
happy hunting,
