I have a number of William's, John's and Samuel's in my Carlile background.
However, they are from New Jersey & Pennsylvania. I farthest back is Samuel
Carlile, (my 3rd great grandfather) born in Philadelphia in Dec 12, 1791. My
Grandfather's middle name was Edmond (John Edmond Carlile).
An unproven family tradition is that our original Carlile fought against the
English during the civil war, where Oliver Cromwell put a price on his head.
He escaped capture and went to Holland. He became a mercenary soldier with
the Dutch West Indian Company and came to New Amsterdam around 1647 serving
under Peter Syvesant. After the English took over New Amsterdam and it
became New York, he left with his family fearing that the price on his head
might be collected. We assume that he went to southeastern Pennsylvania,
since the oldest proven Carlile was born in Philadelphia. Do any of you
Carliles have a similar tradition? With an arrival around 1647, there must
be other Carliles descended from him?
Jim Carlile

Mary what time span are you looking. I'm looking for a William
Carlile b
1785 South Carolina. His sons was John Carlile, Robert H. Carlile, Samuel
Carlile, I find that Carlile is spelled both ways in the same family.
