Hi:
There are lots of spellings of the Carlile name! Hunter Davies book "A Walk
Along The Wall" published by Weidenfeld and Nicolson, London 1974, page
250-253 gives the source of the name as follows: The Romans called the town
of Carlisle, England - Luguvalium, after the sun god called Lugos or Lug.
The French city of Lyons has a similar derivation. During the post-Roman
period the town's name changed to Caerluel (the castle of Luel), "Caer" is
Celtic for castle. Luel is a British attempt to translate the Roman name
Luguvalium.
Information on the family from Scots Peerage states that the family derived
its name from the locality of Carlisle, England. Early spelling of Carlisle
are Caerluel, Carleol, Carlel, Chaerleol, Karliol, and in Norman-French:
Cardoille. The first recorded member of the family , about 1130, was Hildred
de Karleolio (of Carlyle) in possession of Carlisle, Cumquintin
(Cumwhinton), Newby on the moor and other lands including Kirkbampton, his
chief seat. The Scottish branch of the family started with his son Odard of
Carlyle probably one of those who followed the Bruce's to Scotland at the
time of David I. Odard held the fief of Hodeme or Hoddom in Galloway. I
understand that, at present, Carlisle is normally the English spelling and
Carlyle and Carlile the Scottish spelling. There are, of course, many other
spellings, due to spelling variations.

Hi:
Although I consider our family to be CARLYLE, I believe my family goes
back to George/Georg Carlyll and also JAMES CARLILE AND WALTER
CARLILE
born in 1692 and 1722 in Torphichen, West Lothian, Scotland.
Does any of this connect?
