I just saw a note on another Carlile family tree that asserts my 4th great
grandfather, William Carlile, born about 1753 and his wife Sarah, born
about 1763, (both born in Ireland) are William S. Carlile and Sarah Barker,
married at Cuthbert, in Carlisle, Cumberland, England on Oct 29, 1775.
While certainly not impossible, I find it unlikely that these two people
who were born in Ireland, probably of modest means, would have traveled to
England to exchange vows. Also unlikely, at least to me, is that William,
or any man about 22 years of age would marry a 12 year old girl. I thought
15 would probably as young as most people in those days would consider
acceptable.
I am skeptical of this record and would appreciate it if anyone knows
whether or not this record pertains to my ancestry or perhaps another
William and Sarah from England, not Ireland. Thanks.
