I am just recently trying to trace my family history and find that my father and uncle did
not know very much about the Carlile family. I would appreciate any assistance anyone can
give me to trace back my familiy roots.
My father was born in Wellsford, Kiowa Co., Kansas in 1916, the oldest of four brothers,
William Kenneth, Clifford Zene, and Harold Elmo. My grandfather, whom I never knew, was
George Frank Carlile, born in 1891-1892, probably in Russell Co, Kansas. He died in Pratt
Kansas, and was buried in Coats. He was married first to Elma Edith Miller. His second
wife was Marie Olson.
George Frank had (I believe) 11 siblings whom I believe were all born in Kansas: Thomas H.
(Hayden?), Cora M., Clara E., Eliza M., Bertha P., Gertrude I., Hattie Mabel, Walter
William, Myrtle Marie, James, and J. W. C.(although I am not positive on some of this
information). J.W.C. died at age 15, Hattie Mabel died at age 9. The children married
into the Center, Wells, Horgett(Haggert), Flynn, Martin, Woodrum, Lehman and McCammon
families.
George Frank's father was George Gerome Carlile who was born 9 Apr 1850-1859, and my
father believes it was in Jackson Co., Indiana; however, I also heard it was in Iowa. His
wife was named Mary, but I am not sure of the last name as my father says it was
Fankhouser, and on two of the children's death certificates she is listed as Mary
Parsley and Mary Parsbery. Her place of birth was thought to be in California around
1859. Mary's parents are thought to have been born in Illinois (father) and Missouri
(mother).
George Gerome's father is believed to be William Carlile born in Ohio around 1831.
William's parents are believed to have both come from Ireland and lived in Iowa
(Indiana?) where most of his children were born. William first wife is believed to be
Sarah C. (Burbridge) who died around 1860. They had four children George Gerome, Samuel
W., Mathilda M., and Martha J., all born between 1850 and 1858. I am told that
William's second wife was Sarah Jane Smith, daughter of John Reubon Smith, and that
William and his second wife had nine children: William A., Sara J., John C., James W.,
Lucy M., Elie J., Charles Thomas, Evie A., and Ezra D. I am also told that Sara J. died
at age 15, and that Elie and Evie dies at about one year of age.
If anyone can provide me with some assistance in confirming any of the above I would
greatly appreciate it. Thanks.
Stephen Carlile
